A top aide to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie callously laughed it up when she appeared to order lane closures near the George Washington Bridge, sparking a traffic nightmare in Fort Lee, according to newly uncovered emails.

Hours after the damaging emails were leaked on Wednesday Christie distanced himself from the scandal, saying he knew nothing about the “completely inappropriate” lane closures and indicated that only one member of his staff was involved in the “unacceptable” behavior.

The scandal was revealed in a series of electronic communications between Bridget Anne Kelly, one of three deputies on Christie’s senior staff, and the Port Authority seem to show a political vendetta was in the works before the traffic-clogging GWB lane closures in September.

Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich didn’t endorse Christie during the governor’s recent re-election.

“Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee,” Kelly wrote on Aug. 13 to David Wildstein, then one of Christie’s top men at the Port Authority.

Wildstein replied: “Got it.”

Lane closures leading to on-ramps of the GWB, sent rush-hour traffic flooding into Fort Lee the week of Sept. 9, leading to accusations that Christie was exacting political payback.

The governor has steadfastly denied those allegations but these emails bring the traffic stunt to Christie’s doorstep.

Christie suddenly canceled a Sandy-related event he was slated to do Wednesday morning. Hours later he released a statement saying, “I am outraged and deeply saddened to learn that not only was I misled by a member of my staff but this completely inappropriate and unsanctioned conduct was made without my knowledge.”

“People will be held responsible for their actions,” he added, without naming names.

Wildstein, the agency’s director of interstate capital projects, and Bill Baroni, deputy executive director and close Christie ally, both resigned in December amid the controversy.

Kelly and Wildstein appeared to take great joy in failing to return frantic messages from Mayor Sokolich.

When Kelly asked if any of Sokolich’s messages were returned, Wildstein replied: “Radio silence.”

“His name comes right under mayor Fulop.”

That quip was in apparent reference to Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, who has also accused Christie’s administrator of retaliation because he didn’t endorse the incumbent.

Sokolich flipped out Wednesday morning when he learned of the emails between Christie’s top aides.

“How dare you schedule a man-made traffic disaster in my community,” he told The Record newspaper of Bergen County. “It’s the example of the pettiest and most venomous side of politics.”

Sokolich said he wouldn’t argue with anyone making jokes about political corruption in Jersey.

“It also sets our state back another 20 years. We’re now the brunt of misconduct jokes throughout the country,” according to the mayor. “And we deserve it.”

Other communications showed Christie’s pals showed they mocked Sokolich, calling him “this little Serbian.”

The mayor is of Croatian descent.

“I have Serbian friends who I have to believe were insulted because it was said in a condescending way,” he said.
