Random Phone Calls and Stupid Bosses

The black mood that I was in has definitely lessened, but hasn’t completely gone. My psychotic landlord hasn’t given me any more surprising 8 am phone calls, which is a relief.

I started work at my job this week. I work at a clothing store up at school and I transferred stores over the break temporarily so I could make some money. So far, if my hours don’t get cut this week, I will have made enough money for one month’s rent at my new house next semester, which is good. I already ahve enough money for three months, so if I can pay four months rent before going back to school, that would be amazing.

My bosses are pretty nice. I’m not a fan of Julio, one of the managers. The first time I had met him I had introduced myself. Instead of acknowledging the introduction or introducing himself back, he simply asked, “Can you stay til midnight?” I had been in the store since 2pm and had to be back the next day at 9:30 am so I said no…Jesus, with all the employees they have, they can’t ask someone else?? I worked another nine hour shift the following day and on the third day, the day of Christmas eve, they called me up at 6:30 that morning to cancel my 8 am-5 pm shift.

My schedule for the following week was never made since someone had forgotten to enter me into the system. Today I was scheduled from 8 am til noon, which suited me just fine. Four hours, even six or seven hours at work is bearable. Nine hour shifts are killers. Anyway, so one of my other managers, Lisa, approaches me and asks, “Can you come back later tonight and work 6:30 pm til close?” I hated the idea of having to open the store and then having to also close the store. I also hate having to rush through breakfast to make it to work and have dinner at work since I’d be closing. So I lied and said I had to baby-sit my brothers. She gave me a look; she probably knew I was lying, since I’m a terrible liar.

The store managers piss me off. They’re nice enough, sure, but they cancel hours at a whim and then start scrambling to throw extra hours at people when others cancel. I mean, they don’t care about me that I would have to open the store today, have to come back tonight and close, where they would probably make me stay late, and then come back again the next morning to open.

Anyway…as for New Year’s Eve, my pledge class and I are going to Manhattan. The plan is for me to take a train in, have them pick me up, and then we’re going to the Village for dinner. After dinner we’re going to Times Square to see the ball drop and go clubbing afterwards. That’s the plan anyway. Last New Year’s Eve we had all gone to the Beta party; it was amazing and it’ll be hard for this one to even compare. It’s better than staying at home though, I like I did two years back, so I can’t complain.

That’s about it. Other than the odd phone call I got from my ex co-worker, Alex. I worked with him over the summer. We were in the same training class and we all hung out once after work at Denny’s. I liked him well enough, and then he randomly quit one day without saying good-bye. I saw him again earlier this semester at Walmart. He randomly popped up to say hello and then asked for my number, surprisingly. He called me once and then I never heard from him again. I kind of had forgotten about him actually. I never saved his number. He left a brief message on my phone a few days ago to say hello and wish me a Merry Christmas…guess he forgot that I was Jewish…The message was nice enough and he said that he hoped to hear from me soon. He didn’t leave a number though, and since my phone was off when he had called, it wouldn’t give the number he called from. I actually looked his e-mail address up on the school directory to say that I got his message but didn’t have his number to call him back. I haven’t heard from him since. I don’t know, I thought it was just really random that he called.

Anyway…til my next ramble
