tossed two noodles, will they stick?
I’ve been toying with the idea of finding a new job of late. Today, I finally got a version of my resume that I like (2 pages long–woo). Yeah, I know it’s a page too long, but I started with over 5 pages, so I’m calling a 2 pager a win! I’ve taken a bunch of LinkedIn online classes lately (I have no idea if anyone actually cares about these, but they’ve made me feel a little less rusty and a little more confident, so I’m calling it a valuable use of my time).
Today, I wrote a cover letter even though writing cover letters tends to inspire anxiety and wallowing in self-loathing (seriously, no one wants to read a cover letter, do they?). I asked for help with the first draft from a man who gets job offers easily. His fantastic advice was to start it off with, “To Whom it May Concern.” This means that white men actually get jobs starting cover letters with “To Whom it May Concern.” OMG. I am not a white man, so I didn’t begin my letter that way. I actually started it with, “Hello!” Yes, I went to hello! Probably a bad idea, but if you can’t handle a business form filled out with “Hello” as the greeting, we’re not a good fit for each other (also, the space I had to include the cover letter only allowed 600 characters including spaces, I wasn’t going to waste all that space with “To Whom it May Concern.” I’ve hired people and I can tell you that I’d rather just not read the “To Whom it May Concern” letter. Ugh.
I think it was the second-best cover letter I’ve ever written though. The first one was for a job I never applied for. It was a crappy retail job but I was prevented from applying for it and using the best cover letter ever, so it will forever be known in my head as the job that got away. *sigh*
Anyway, armed with my “damn good resume for someone who can’t write resumes” and my “OK cover letter,” I tossed a noodle! This means that I applied for a job. And then I was very, very, very brave.
You see, there’s a job posting that’s been living in my head for like 2 weeks. It keeps getting taken down and reposted. I’ve started to apply for it thrice. It’s intimidating in a way, but the idea of working there is exciting. And honestly, if I were to say to someone that I work there, they might be actually impressed. And it’s a company with potentially incredible room for advancement or other cool opportunities. And I’d really find it fun to learn about it from the inside! That sounded gross. I didn’t mean it to sound gross.
Anyway, two noodles have been thrown at the job board, let’s see if either of them sticks. If not, I’m still employed elsewhere and I do like my current jobs.
