Crossing From ‘Well Lubricated’ to ‘Morose’
God I love Cindy Lauper, and that seemingly painted-on shouting elvis sneer of her’s; ee–yaa yaa yaa yaa yaaaaa! Her and Michelle Pfeiffer were early crushes, among others– there was just something about those pale frail princesses with high voices, and higher cheek bones. Few weeks ago I took a little trip to an old local grocery store for a grape soda. It’s one of the oldest "still the same" businesses that I’m familiar with, and I recall the place in great detail from early-early childhood– walking up there with my great grandmother, and scoring a grape soda from the "soda section," which was an oddly dark hallway that segued into the STAFF ONLY part of the store (about as smoothly as I segued from Cindy Lauper into grape soda). Unfortunately, I could no longer just find a single can of grape soda…but there were 12 packs, so I shrugged, and grabbed one up. Sometimes a man just needs a little grape drink. Mmmm, it’s purple…
Set the case down on the slightly-higher-than-average curb, and fetched one out. Drinking it on that particular curb there was another part of the nostalgic ritual, but after cracking one open and taking a sip, I had something a bit closer to a "Mmuukkgh…..it’s shit," reaction. In case anyone else hasn’t had grape soda since the mid-80s and was wondering if was still delicious, let me assure you– it is not. Grape soda is disgusting.
That said, can I interest anyone in a case of them?
We don’t have grape soft drink in Aus. I first tried it in Japan in 2010, an American brand. It left a lot to be desired, especially as I have been a massive “grape” fan, since childhood. I like that it has the nostalgia factor, for you. Reminded me of walking hand in hand to the deli, with my grandfather. After watching the cricket and playing Scrabble. Thank you.
