Clash Of The Titans
We naturally assign the things in the world that surround us, either literally or through vicarious thoughtfulness, with varying degrees of importance and significance. A topic, or book, or street corner, or anything really…can have it’s personal intangible value judged in an instant, on a level much deeper than conscious awareness. For instance, when suddenly faced with the split decision to visit one’s grandmother on the way home, or stop by the bar for a quick drink, one might feel more inclined to go to the bar, if such an action were granted a higher degree of immediate importance…despite the fact that the conscious mind would never put going to the bar above spending time with family. There may be a project in progress that is related to the bar; perhaps a person there that one is in the middle of some kind of psychological game with, thus raising the degree of immediate importance in the bar’s favor. Such judgements are a collection of circumstance, and as such are never explicitly permanent. A week from now, when the game between the bar patron has dissolved or been resolved, the more important visit might certainly lean back towards one’s grandmother, back in line with one’s conscious and objective values. I have always referred to this quick-assigned relative importance regarding things both tangible and intangible as weight, or better- as gravity.
Weight, or "mass-importance" is suitable…but gravity is defined more as already possessing weight, and drawing us into it. The people, or characters, or musicians, or films that hold gravity and draw our attention generally represent pure forms of certain ideals we may hold. Think about it for a moment…the things that have held your attention most recently, and why. Who or what holds the most gravity in your lives, at this moment? When it comes to individuals, I often call those who hold the most idealistic importance to me titans, and there is never a time in my life that I am more giddy and ecstatic than when two of these types of individuals collide; either with one another, or with me personally.
Thumbs up, dude.
