Springing Into Summer
It’s downright sultry tonight. And I don’t have AC. There’s a beat up old unit in our closet that was Erika’s last year. I’m debating hauling it out and plugging it in. But it’s a tough call cause I only have one window in my room and if I plugged it up with an AC unit I couldn’t look outside my window and that would be sad. Plus the heat is supposed to break by thursday. I think I’m gonna tough it out, at least for now.
Don’t get me wrong. I love summer, even with all the humidity. But summer in April, when I still have things to do is not helpful to my work ethic. The weather is telling me it’s “break mode” yet I still have papers and readings and exams. Sigh. Today i said the hell wiht it and went to the beach with Rachel K. I must say that’s one of the wonderful thigns about New York. Where else can you get a huge ass park, the hustle and bustle of the city and a beach all a subway ride away! It reminded me of my semester abroad how on the weekends we’d go down to the beach (and on the weekdays after class)
We did each get a little bit of reading done and afterwards I went shopping. There’s such inexpensive stuff down in Brighton Beach! I got a new bathign suit for $32 and a new tank top for $6. I wanted to get more but they have this really annoying anal rule that you can try on tops or anythign that goes on over your head. Um, hello! I think the days of lice are far behind us and even if I’m wrong it’s a risk I’m willing to take. I refuse to buy something before being absolutely sure it fits. I made an exception for the tank top b/c it was obvious it would fit but it ruled out a lot of the other nice stuff 🙁
Shopping always drains me. It’s rare I can find stuff I like and I hate the changing room mirror. By the time I left at 7 i was not only drained from shopping, I was hot and blistered and sandy (the one downside to the beach, at least if you don’t have a bathouse nearby to wash off). When I got back into town I went to the gym and tried out my new bathing suit. It actually still looked good after I bought it. Better actually. That was a plus. It was nice to swim laps and lose myself in the rythm of it. After my swim I went upstairs to the sunroof (is it a moonroof if you go after dark?) It wasn’t well lit and it was deserted and kind of creepy at first. But then i got used to it and enjoyed having a quiet space to myself. And b/c i was 9 stories up I could even see stars. In Manhattan!
The walk home from the gym was slow. My shoes were irritating my open blisters and the heat just made the goign so much more sluggish. Got home and Rachel (S) called me. We’re going to Shea two weeks from now. Note to myself: call tomororw about tix before they sell out.
I got back to one of the subletters last night. He’s interested and his brother is gonna come by tomorrow night at 8 to check out the room for him. I hope it goes well.
