Fat-Bottomed Girl
I don’t think I look bad, really. A little frumpy sometimes, poor as a church-mouse other times, but I don’t look BAD. I – I think that I manage my wardrobe in such a way that despite the fact that 70% of my clothes are well over 5 years old, I don’t LOOK that bad.
But. I think I might really be in denial. Otherwise, why would I have to run to the store ANYTIME I need something ‘nice’ to go out in? And, ya know, it really doesn’t matter where I’m going out, I always seem to need SOMETHING.
So.
I’m going to start sewing. I managed to score a zigzag foot at the thrift store – I don’t think that I have a zigzag PLATE though, so I’ll have to scour eBay for that. I’ve got the sewing machine – nothing too complex, but it works. I think I’ve finally broken down and am going to go to the fabric store and get a cutting pad for the rotary cutter – I suck with scissors, and we have the money, so why not do it?
At the top of my list of things to make:
1) Recreate my favourite skirt. It’s really a tube dress that was a little too short, so I slid the tube bit around my waist, and it turns into a lovely drop-waisted full, ankle length skirt. That’s going to be task #1, as I’m wearing this skirt into the GROUND.
2) Recreate one of my favourite dresses. Long, sleeveless wrap dress. Very full, but pretty simple. I think that creating the pattern from it will be the hard part.
3) Make a couple of shirts. Well, really, I’ll need to learn how to do a full bust alteration, first, I think, as I’m not sure that ANY of my patterns are actually big enough to contain the girls. We shall see. It’s usually much easier for me to find/buy shirts than it is dresses/skirts, largely because I like them LONG. I’m talking Pentacostal long, here.
I think – no, I know that having nicer/newer clothing will make ME feel better. Heck, that could start to be a fun reason for me to get up in the morning – organizing my wardrobe and figuring out what I’m going to wear.
The only ‘gap’ right now is shoes, and having read this, I’m really in no hurry to just go out and buy a pair (or six). I suspect that I’ll end up in ballet flats in multiple colors – assuming I can find some that are actually soft enough to be comfy, have no irritating seams, and somehow manage to make my feet look other than duckly. Mrr. I don’t know. I might just get another pair of thongs, now that I can actually wear them again, and henna my nails for the summer. I dunno. I’ll figure something out.
This weekend, I’m hoping to create the pattern for my skirt, dig up poison ivy, go to the Farmers Market, collect our co-op stuff, go to the grocery store, and mail out a couple of packages. That’s not too major of a to-do list, esp. since I already have a list, and I almost have the packages done. *nod*
I’m making an active effort to NOT get online once I’m home from work – I spend all day online, and there is really no need for me to spend all night online too. It’s really amazing how much of a timesuck the computer is, even as fond as I am of it. 😉
I am in awe of anyone who can sew. It’s a skill I never learned.

Thanks for posting that article. Very interesting! Have fun and good luck with the sewing.

That is a very interesting article. I’m really tempted to go and find some of those Vivo shoes. Lord knows I don’t want to go all “Caveman” but a lot of that makes sense, doesn’t it? Have you sewn before? I am assuming that you have but if you HAVEN’T, it should be easy to make a pattern by ripping out every seam in your dress, tracing around the pieces and adding 3/4″ to each edge.

Yeah, I don’t blame you there. It’s a huge pain to do it that way. I’m sure that what you end up with will BLAZE with your unique – everything!! So far everywhere I’ve looked for those shoes turns out to be a foot fetish site. 🙂

Bust alterations are really hard on patterns that aren’t big enough to contain your bust. Start larger and take everthing else in.

I, too, have to go out when I need something ‘nice’. I’m right there with ya! And, ahem- yep, I bought a sewing machine like 3 years ago & can’t even figure out how to thread the thing! DOH! Shoes, ahhhhhhhhhh, shoes- I’m a shoe whore- by my own admission, but I am tending to buy more comfy ones as I get older. Have you heard about the ‘fit-flops’? Check ’em out!

Every time my mom gets into a quilting project, I go into fabric-lust. I want multiple skirts out of these fabrics. She always offers to make them. And then I remember that I look really, really bad in skirts. I mean, bad enough that the police should probably write me a ticket. It’s the whole conundrum of either looking like 50 pounds in a 5 pound bag, or the skirt being so roomy that I might behiding refugees in it.

Check out Simplicity pattern 2996. I picked it up this week at the JoAnn $1.99 pattern sale (still going on!) The great part about this pattern is the dress has seperate pattern pieces for a bust up to size D! This is the first time I saw this because like you I have to always make cumbersome pattern alterations with terrible results. I am hoping for a better outcome with this!
