I’d Drive It Everywhere~~~

Each morn she slowly walks

along this quiet street.

With head held high and aging eyes,

she smiles at those she meets.

One day as she was nearing home,

she stopped to say “Good day.”

We briefly introduced ourselves,

then she went on her way.

The next day she stopped by again,

as I washed my car.

“I love it,” she said suddenly,

her eyes like twinkling stars.

Her husband came to take her home.

He gently took her hand.

“It’s time to go, my dear,” he said.

“Do you understand?”

“Yes, Yes,” she answered quickly,

but hesitated instead.

“Would you buy me a car like this?”

she asked her husband, Fred.

“And what would do if I bought it for you?”

Fred asked his wife, Claire.

“Why I’d drive it, of course,” she replied.

“I’d drive it everywhere.”

The next day as she was walking home,

I waved and said, “Hi Claire.”

She slowed her pace and looked at me,

her eyes a puzzled stare.

“Are you alright?” I asked her.

“It’s your neighbor, Sue.”

She gently took my hands in hers

and asked… “Do I know you?”

Unfortunately, I think my grandpa is slowly getting dementia. Everyday he’s slowly forgetting things. Simple things like where he put his keys, etc. It makes me sad and it’s sad that he realizes it and makes comments such as “I think I may be getting dementia”.

This is wonderful, quietly enquiring and observing in which you write almost in innocence. I can feel your pain when you realize the truth.

This is a very moving poem, my friend. What a dreadful scourge Alzheimer’s is! I have read some promising and hopeful news about treatment recently and do fervently hope researchers and scientists are closing in on effective medication and treatment that would prevent so much suffering and loss. It was so nice to hear from you again. Many thanks for your notes.

RYN: Your notes at Free-born are beautiful and I thank you so much. And yes, we both have well known the love of horses. We share a common bond that way indeed! Stay well!
