And Then We Kissed~~~

I went to an estate sale this past weekend, and as I walked through the rooms where people were milling about searching for a “find,” I found myself drawn to a bookcase in one of the bedrooms. I told myself before entering the house, that I would not buy any more books. My shelves are overflowing. Books are piled on my desk, beneath my desk, beside my desk, on my nightstand, beside my nightstand, and so on… But as I have often said, books seem to find me. And so, it was with this book ~ The Kiss.

“A kiss is something you cannot give without taking and cannot take without giving.”

“Her lips on his could tell him better than all her stumbling words”~ Margaret Mitchell (1900-1949)

“Give me a kiss,

and to that kiss a score;

Then to that twenty,

add a hundred more:

A thousand to that hundred:

so kiss on,

To make that thousand

up a million.

Treble that million,

and when that is done,

Let’s kiss afresh

as when we first begun.” ~ Robert Herrick (1591-1674)

“Love at the lips was touch

as sweet as I could bear.” ~ Robert Frost (1874-1963)

“She lifted her face suddenly to him, and he touched it with his lips. So cold, so fresh, so sea-clear her face was, it was like kissing a flower that grows near the surf.” ~ D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930)

“I will leave thee when…

I have gently stolen from they lips

Their yet untasted nectar, to allay

The raging of my thirst, e’en as the bee

Sips the fresh honey from thee.” ~ From Opening Bud by Kalidasa, a fifth-century Indian dramatist and poet.

“We embraced each other with – how to say it? – a momentous smiling calm, as if the cup of language had silently overflowed into these eloquent kisses which replaced words like the rewards of silence itself, perfecting thought and gesture.” ~ Lawrence Durrell (1912-1900)

“The sunlight clasps the earth

and the moonbeams kiss the sea

What are all those kissings worth

If thou kiss not me?” ~Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822)

The Kiss is a romantic treasury of 60 black and white photographs accompanied by quotes and writings from writers throughout the ages ~ and as you turn page after page ~ you will remember… The Kiss ~

Do your remember your first kiss?   I do…

The hesitation, the anticipation, my mixed emotions of excitement and fear, as he drew me near. I still remember well his lips pressed against mine, and I felt that nothing could ever equal that special moment in time. Yet, the kiss was bittersweet for that was the last time that James and I would ev

er meet. Those were days of youthful innocence, inexperienced in worldly ways, fragrant with the scent of love’s first blossoms and promises of forever and a day. But life has a way of uprooting us and prodding us along a different course. And in time, we learn to accept our disappointments and feelings of remorse. Then one day, a new dawn begins, and we feel the thrill and exhilaration of falling in love again. Each kiss is as sweet as the first, but as different as the seasons, and we discover the reason that we are alive ~ to love ~ forever and a day, no matter what comes our way. And I remember well and cherish each kiss ~ and with each one, I always feel that nothing can ever equal such a special moment as this…

With much love and heartfelt kisses always~

There’s a song (from the thirties I think) that expresses it beautifully: Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life”.

I love rummaging around the Salvation Army thrift store for books: old books, kid books, love books, cookbooks and so on. Sounds like you found a treasure. Unfortunately, I don’t have a clue who I gave my first kiss to. I do, however, remember the moment and how unsure of myself I felt. It was a one time stand, never saw him again. Now ask me who I first fell in love with and I could tell ya 😉
