Zombie Run

One of my faces asked how my Zombie 5K Obstacle Course went after seeing some pictures on Facebook.

In a word: miserable.

You all may remember I started training for this in December using the Couch-to-5K app, which I love.  You may also remember I got sick a few weeks ago and started slacking on my training then, so I was a little nervous about the run this past Saturday.

Turns out it didn’t matter how much I trained, because there was one thing I wasn’t prepared for: copious amounts of mud.

Initially I thought this was due to the terrible storms we’d had the night before, but one of the other runners we encountered told us they had intentionally made the course muddy.  Seriously, it was so muddy that my friend Heather lost a shoe at least three times during the 3.1 miles.  I might have lost one too except I had tied mine on so tight they were almost impossible to get off afterward.

We walked the whole thing.  Slowly.  It took us almost 2 1/2 hours to finish the course.  By the time we were done, we would have been covered in mud – except that one of the last obstacles involved swimming across a freezing cold river.

I only wish I was joking.

I do not know how people run in that kind of mud.  It was like trying to run in quicksand.  Halfway through the course I was ready to give up and sit down and wait for someone to rescue me; only Heather’s encouragement kept me going.

So, the 5K part? Not so fun.  But you know what was a lot of fun? Being a zombie!

Heather and I had volunteered to be zombies, so before our run, we got costumes and professional make-up and they put us on a particularly muddy section of the course with a bunch of other zombies.  Our job was to act like zombies and take flags off the belts of passing runners – if runners lost all their flags, they too became "zombies".  It was a blast!  Although I did lose my boots at one point (considering the weather the previous night, I wisely decided to bring one pair of shoes to "zombie" in and another to run in) and ended up doing the last two hours of my shift barefoot in the cold mud, I had so much fun.

Moral of the story: zombie = fun, 5K-mud-run = not fun.

Ack! I saw the mud in the photos and was like, “really? how?” and now I understand. Sorry the run part was so awful, but YAY for the zombie part! That does sound like fun. 🙂

oh, i’ve been wondering what it’s like to be part of one of those! thanks for letting me know about the mud. it does seem like it would be way more fun to be a zombie.

Its really nice that you’re a mom, but you do fun things for yourself. Its nice that you have a supportive partner too. I think it makes you a better mom. I wish my friend Kristi would take some time for herself and do fun stuff. She doesnt have a supportive partner though and I think her kids fill every single one of her emotional needs.

Weird. So it was more mud wrestling than running? You could have just given in and lolled around in the mud like a pig and then tried to hug everyone who ran by. 😛 That does sound miserable..

ewwww I wouldn’t like that one bit! Some friends of mine are doing “tuff mudder”and that’s all about obstacles and dirt and crap and no way would I do anything like that!! You may remember my kids did a zombie walk and next year I’m definitely doing it with them as it looked like so much fun!! 🙂

Ok, running – not my thing regardless. Running in heaving cesspit of mud? Def not my thing! Glad you had the zombiefying to make up for the mud. RYN: I still feel like the ending was left far too ‘unfinished’, there were too mnay loose ends not tied up. S woke me up no less than five times saying ‘but what about walt? where was he? And Ana Lucia?? Why didn’t Ben go into the church? I DON’T UNDERSTAAAAAAND!’. Which is fine during daylight houts, not so great at 2am lol. I cried while watching it…again. Never fails to tear me up though. 🙂

5k run? Not so much. Being a zombie in the mud? Sign me up! Braaaaaaains!

the zombie part sounds like a total blast! I’d love to do something like that! The 5k mud run though? Not so much… I could do without that part. 🙂

wow — I must admit, it does sounds like fun. BUT – 5km in mud etc is WAY WAY tougher than a 5km jog along a path. So rather unfair on people who are fit enough to run 5km, and not a lot more. I can imagine that must have been exhausting
