Legislating Hatred

Plato, one of the greatest civic thinkers throughout all of human history, once stated that only tyrants suppress homosexuality. After democracy had its chance to function and ultimately fail yesterday, I must heavy-heartedly conclude that this is a nation of tyrants.

Since when did the "pursuit of happiness" become a qualitative phrase meant only for a particular demographic? How do we withhold the RIGHT to marriage from a certain few without wondering–how is this different from banning African-Americans from marriage? Hispanics from marriage? The elderly from marriage? When did a free will and a bottomless love for a fellow human being become detestable in the conditioned voids of a heartless, supposedly educated populace?

This isn’t religious and it sure as fuck isn’t fair. This is pure, unadulterated ignorance. This is hatefulness at its most virulent and thoughtlessness at its most deplorable.

I can’t even begin to comprehend why this happened. Was this a multitude of people who forgot how they felt when they met the person they fell in love with and married? Was this a bittersick host of misguided malcontents who wanted others to feel as disenfranchised as them? Was this a manifestation of a Christian nation choosing a foolish, pick-and-choose methodology when it comes to enforcing their religion upon those who just desperately wish to be happy? Since when was any brand of happiness, any variety of love unholy?

I hope all of my friends in love, whenever it happens and with whoever it happens to be, can find as much happiness in this nation of legislated hatred and celebrated ignorance as possible.
