Icarus Unmasked
We willed what we’ve become.
This is it: Both the before and after
Like the warnings and the disaster.
Plaster walls where shuttered windows
Leak seconds like time-lapsed photos.
I talked, explained, waved my arms wildly,
Childishly hiding that I don’t know.
The promises were lies before I spoke them,
Before I held them up and laughing broke them–
I can’t be this and that and neither, either.
So I cross my wires and proudly lie:
We’ll unfurl like flags across the bandit sky
That steals my thoughts from their grounded sty.
Wax melts on planes that high.
