*Poof*

June 4,

First, I want to announce to those of you who are in or around the Portland, OR area— my sister Julia’s show at the “Gallerie Rene” 207 SW Pine Street in Portland. The artist reception is on First Thursday, June 7th, from 6-8pm. The show “Kimono Series” is up Thursday-Saturday through June 30th. I’m so proud of her I can hardly stand it. (AND I can’t stand that I won’t be able to be there this week for her opening night.) Our parents are there now—as will be our friend MaryAnn soon—so at least some family is there to represent! Mom says the show is absolutely stunning. Of course!! So go check it out if you can!

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

Over Mother’s Day weekend, my friend Twyla and I drove up for a 4-day get-away to see her mom in western ND. Twy and I have known each other for 32 years, and still we talked constantly all the way to, through and back from ND. In all those years of our friendship, I have never been to her tiny hometown. It was wonderful to see her history and roots—and it bonded our friendship tighter than ever.

Here’s a little pictorial of the mood of the landscape and weekend.

Her family farm—now no longer lived on.

Duke on the front porch of the house in town.

I had a lot of high school graduation activities and party invitations this year—even though all our boys graduated two years ago. This is my first full class of theatre kids that I have watched grow from freshmen to seniors—so it’s been especially sad and sweet. So many of these kids are dear to me. I hadn’t realized that Adrienne, our costume prodigy—was also class valedictorian, and she spoke at the ceremony. In a follow up newspaper interview, I was surprised and honored that Adrienne’s answer to “Who influenced you the most?” was me! What a sweetheart for her to say that. I am still getting used to the idea that I really do have the chance to positively impact young people’s lives. It’s an awesome responsibility as well—which I hope I am capable of upholding. Yikes!

———————————————————————————————————————————————————

Along with continuing to work with high school theatre–I have a new project next school year—due to a grant (wheee… actual money!). I will be working with grades K-6 as an artist in residence at the new Arts and Technology school here in town. Another artist friend has been working with many school art programs in the city—and she has always wanted to get me involved. Now we will be working together two days per week. She has been collaborating with a large paper company—who now want to sponsor this little school. So I will be working with new and recycled paper as my medium on several ideas; two and three dimensional costumes of the world, large puppets, and storybook theatre. My imagination is pretty fired up about this—the possibilities seem endless! I’m sure I’ll be talking more about THIS in the months to come!

———————————————————————————————————————————————————

One of the gifts from the Theatre Guild at awards night this year was tickets for the directors to go to see “Wicked”. Four of us “girls” went to Denver on Saturday for a total night out on the town. We had indescribably delicious dinners at “Rioja” on Larimer Square, and then walked to the theatre.

The. Show. Was. Amazing. *faints*

Great music…delightfully off-beat story line…astonishing sets…and utterly mind-boggling GENIUS costumes. We were 10 rows from the front—so we could see wonderful detail on everything. Totally, TOTALLY fun. I love that there are things like this in the world.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————-

I am designing the flower arrangements for a wedding coming up in a couple weeks. The bride is from Japan—and her dress (more of a western style) has been made from antique white embroidered kimono silk that belonged to her grandmother. I will be (attempting) a Japanese style to the bouquet, corsages and table arrangements. I’m looking forward to this challenge! Photos to come.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Soon after that, I will be taking three of our students to the International Thespian Conference which hosts up to 5,000 theatre students from around the US and the world. It is SUCH a wonderful week of events and solid theatre. I cannot WAIT!!!

And *poof* there goes June.

And then three weeks in ND for a big family reunion…*poof* there goes July.

Who knows what’s in store for August—but summer will be gone..*poof* *poof* *poof*!

:)xo

I’ve always felt that as I get older (aka out of college finally), I’d love to have a life like yours. That is how I’ve always pictured myself… living a life, havinga family, career, etc… much like you have. You are so fortunate.

Now I really wanna see Wicked! Your whole family is incredibly talented, I’m gathering… … and how cool that the class valedictorian named you as her greatest influence… that’s pretty huge , you know. And not the least bit surprising.

As always, your entries leave me breathless! You have such a great life!!

Poof, just keep us informed so we don’t think you go poof. 🙂 So glad you updated.

June 5, 2007

you inspire me too!!! Such talent and boundless energy!

Artist in Residence! That is so amazing. And of course, you are definitely a positive influence of those many young people that you’ve worked with over the years.

RYN: It’s not actually written in Ukrainian! It’s the title of the novel, really!

EVERYBODY gets to see Wicked but me! **pouts** Can’t wait to see the play… Your life is full and yes, summer will soon disappear under that schedule, but what a way to go, huh? 🙂 Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! Your sister’s talent is mind-boggling. Will try to find time to search for a website before I leave. Isn’t it wonderful (and a little surprising!) when all those “adopted” children come back to say thanks? Reward from heaven! 🙂 RYN: What? Coral and turquoise aren’t everyday colors in the garb of your townsfolks? You gotta get those folks to think more colorfully! LOL! Yeah, it is hard with Mom, but I try not to expect much and just take whatever comes my way. Hardest of all is that she knows what is happening to her. I see her tonight and then we head for the Keys, but will call her periodically. Hey, thanks for dropping in. Always good to see you! **HUGS**

Adrienne’s appreciation of you surprises me not one iota. J And, CONGRATS on the new gig! I’ll look forward to the flower pix. I live in one of the last three CA Japantowns, and the ikebana shop is one of my fave places to peek in when I’m walking around. The “master” who works there gives lessons, and from what I understand it’s equal parts philosophy and flower arranging. One of these days, perhaps! Much aloha,

So good to hear your latest news. (Hug) It reminds me of when I’m working with ideas in the possibility realm how there is no sense of time passing “Poof!”, but your actual life is that full with possibility. I quite enjoy this with you. And I remember what you went through in the past. Ryn: I was not comfortable with that entry; I cannot tell how someone else would read it, so I’ll wait until it ‘finishes cooking’ you know? I would like to hear what you were thinking if you have time to note about it.

What perfectly wonderful poof-poof-poof-ing! I adore the family farm photos. I’ll be wandering there for days 🙂 Great about your sis and all these super doings of yours! You’re as awesome as ever and just keep getting better and better! Love,

You are amazing!

Very charming photos! I didn’t remember, though am not surprised, that your sister is an artist, too! (Is she a full-time artist?) I’d love to go down and see her show, since there’s a conference I’d like to attend in Portland this same weekend. (This all depends upon whether or not our car is actually drivable, however, since Yeem went out and bought a new bumper home tonight – I sense a weekendof high automotive fun coming on…) Anyway, you so richly deserve the ascending arc of your successful artistic and mentoring life. It makes me happy to know you! 🙂

…so much good news in one little old entry! I hate to leave out comments on any of it. It sure sounds like you’re keeping yourself busy with things that you love to do. I love forward to getting back to the same for myself. :-/ I’m very excited about you becoming an artist in residence for the elementary school. That is going to be SO much fun! One of our friends is the art teacher at a localCatholic elementary school and she’s done it for years and loves it. Have a wonderful summer! And thanks for the note…every bit helps.

. . and poof my energy has gone just reading about all this work – I remember those days of high energy, vision and excitement – hopefully some degree of all will return to me with a lessening of family trauma which leaves me rather deflated . . . looking forward to future photos and descriptions on all these wonderful plans. BTW I really appreciate your compliment on my photo I have to admit I also wondered if it has some marketability. Son T wants me to invest in a new Nikon so I can have a higher return on my photography. Have I ever sent you to his photo portfolio? I think you’d like his work – he inspires me. I’m so excited for Julia and as I said, would love to drive down but have a shaky situation with one of my precious ones right now.

I love your entries.

You do the best *poofs* and I love love love you!

At Christmas she drew the Three wise men on camels following the STAR. blue chalk on blackboard. That beautiful scene has followed me . Love this entry.CHEERS!
