Fun With Clay

What do you think?

It’s been a long time since I’ve done anything creative Just Because. I usually do things either for orders or for others, but last night I just let a little whimsy loose. I’ve been wanting to do something NOT CUTE with polymer clay—so inspired by my sister’s kimono series paintings, I pulled out my colored clay and played with a little costume design, a little fantasy and this figurine evolved. The orange looking clay is actually more of a metallic copper, the yellow is really chartreuse–and the purple is much darker and richer than this photo shows…and now that I look at it, her nose looks weird.. (Sheesh! Nothing’s right! I may have to re-take these photos in the daylight…)

I wanted her to hold a little birdcage, or tiny wind chimes of some kind…maybe even a miniature puppet–but I found this little lantern (one of my odd earrings) for now. She stands about 8 ½ inches tall. I love how the clay drapes like fabric, and think she will be the first of a series of costume themes.

I think you can make a fortune doing era costumes of all sorts ie a whole series of 1950s or the gowns of Marie Antoinette’s court or Elizabethan or a retrospect of American women’s styles or whatever…the possiblities are limitless and so is your talent. I’d love to have a series that focused on the costume not the character with faces done more or less in the abstract..shapes but no features really…

OMG….she’s so gorgeous! How ever did you get the flat design into the clay without it bleeding or loosing its edge? I love the rippling, the colors (even if they are not true in the photo), her hands…all of it! The one issue I have is her hairstyle….could her hair ‘go’ with the kimono more? One of those Geisha hairdos. She looks more Indian. I love this…you are very talented!

PS…what sort of oven and temperatures do you use? What is in the center of the figure…an armiture? I am mystified….

If you ever feel like talking a little about technique, I’d love to know more about how you did this. I’ve never seen polymer clay work that was this sophisticated.

I agree with others on doing a series. forget about sales, it should be shown in an exhibition. You are truly talented. both for vision and execution.
