Full Speed Ahead

My boys are young men. HOW did that happen? I can still feel the memory of the weight of their baby carriers on my arms. I can still hear their joyous baby laughter in my ears.

Now I feel their kisses on the top of MY head. And now I hear things like this: “Mom, Jena and I are going to take a 5 day car trip to South Carolina.” hundreds of miles driving on unfamiliar freeways.. I felt sheer panic while my calm voice said “Oh? When is this going to happen?”

I knew things like this would happen of course. We all know the inevitability of these wings of flight eventually and intellectually…but nothing prepares you for it emotionally. I am a wreck and the boys think it’s “cute” of me. sigh.

In other matters–I have three jam-packed three-ring binders that hold the stuff of my major projects for this year.

I have one binder for the fall musical “42nd Street”, one for the Scotland trip and all the fund-raising that involves, and one for my bread and butter business “Itti-Bitties”.

Each notebook has a To-Do” list as the front page, and each To-Do list is totally overwhelming. Totally. Overwhelming. Every day I do as many of those To-Do’s as I can. And every day I add more things to each list. Sheesh. But do I love this? Absolutely.

Yesterday we had our first costume meeting of the year. Many students showed up in the theater because we had a combined meeting with costume and technical theater for our initial introduction.

When we divided into our specific groups, I was shocked to see that 30 students were interested in costume. Thirty students. THIRTY STUDENTS! We didn’t even all FIT into the costume work area! I had to stand on a chair so that all of them could see me! As I looked out over the sea of faces, I saw some who were familiar and friendly, some stared at me expressionless, some eyed me suspiciously and some who were obviously fascinated. I’m pretty sure I will not end up with all thirty—but STILL!

I have three guys this time. So far. We’ll see how long they last. Daniel is tall, gorgeous, very much out of the closet, and quite adored by all. This is his second year with me.

Logan I actually met by chance a few days ago as I was on the way out of the school. I walked past him—and then registered the burgundy velvet topcoat and draped mustard colored scarf, silver rings attached all over his pants, his round violet-colored sunglasses and his natural red mohawk.

I stopped short, turned around and walked back up to him.

He narrowed his eyes a little defensively until I said: “I really like your style. Would you ever consider being on my costume crew for the theater?” And then he melted completely and grinned hugely. Excitedly he said “Yes! I AM going to be on your crew! I am coming to the meeting you’re having! I want to do hair and make up!”

And Eric—well…I worry about his behavior somewhat, based on my past observances of him, but he is very enthusiastic and respectful so far. Maybe he grew up a bit over the summer.

And the girls I’ll get to know as time and projects go on.

Gosh I LOVE this! And I do not have any time to write about it. I should not even BE here. We are going to Spain in three weeks…whoa two dozen more items to put onto a trip To-Do list…..

Gotta go, all you dears and dahlinks! Don’t give up on me—I’ll be back.

(oh and by the way…to deal with my recent practical shoe trauma, I balanced things out a bit and bought these velvet slipper-like pair with sequins flowers and gold piping….a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do!)

Your to-do list (or binders, as it were) sounds divine. It also sounds much more fun than my binders for Intro to Biology, Physics for Elementary Teachers…you get the idea. 🙂 Not that I won’t love every minute of the school, though! Your reputation must’ve prececeded you, K. Those kids are so lucky to have you working with them. I can’t wait to see this year’s costumes!!

I love your life. And your enthusiasm for it. Always a joy to read your entries!

Very exciting stuff going on for you to help you through that ‘boys to men’ transition you are going through with your sons. 🙂

I’m am so in tune with you about the boys growing up and going “off” on their own. Last month Tommy went to an Airborne Convention in Mil.WI. Drove up there from Ft. Bragg, NC. I said, you don’t even know where Mil. is! His reply “MAPQUEST,Gramma”. He made it and had a ball. OMIGOD. Your boys are adorable and accomplished. Aren’t we just the luckiest people in the world?

I’m not surprised at the list of thirty. Word has gotten around in your community about what an amazing treasure you are to work with and the kids know how lucky they are to have the opportunity 🙂

yes, who said those children could grow up? I know I did not give Lizzie permission to grow up, they need to stop that. 🙂

…you are so organized! Be proud of it! Just imagine if you didn’t have your notebooks! I’m wondering how I could incorporate some binders into my disheveled disorganized life! Five days to get to and from SC? That’s a long ways for a short stay. They must feel so independent. What are their plans for the fall?

Where did you find those adorable velvet slippers?

wow, that’s a heck of a lot of stuff. i’m just so glad to know you and know someone who really is flourishing so well artistically and familially. 🙂

You are developing a following in the school…another great year of costumes ahead!

I am so excited for you. I will now continue to live vicariously through you again this year.

RYN: You’re too sweet. But really, I can’t afford to throw money at organizations in need right now, and I have a huge house with a guest room and a library that are rarely used. And hey, we’re pet-friendly. Do me a favor, and spread the word about hurricanehousing.org?

I don’t think your nest is empty so much as it’s expanding! (Including 30 new fledglings!) But OK, so I know, it’s delightful, but not quite the same, when dealing with some little chickens, and partridges, and the occasional cuckoo, after you’ve been used to tending two BIG BIRDS! Heh! I look forward to reading of the new avian rotation, however! And as far as style, those shoes are NICE!

i am jealous that you are sooo organized. thanks for the great idea about the binders.

Is Spain another family adventure? How exciting both for the trip and the new theatre season.

Mmmm 🙂 Give up on you? Pshaw!!! Not in a million. You already have a star in heaven.
