February Thoughts
Don and I are kind of honeymooning these days. These quiet days and nights without our giant teens, are ours alone now. Its not that we are re-discovering our relationship—as we have always been aware, appreciative and adoring of each otherbut we are simply gravitating more tightly together.
We seem to be talking constantly (which is nothing new)diving into one subject or another, and laughing hard. We banter about our often wildly opposing musical tastes. We agree about Bach, YoYoMa and Glen Gould. But Charles Ives with all his dissonant layers makes me want to stab stuff. Mahler makes me impatient (okay heres the ending at lastno, its not the endingwait, HERES the ending nope, guess not .this MUST be the ending ..oh PLEASE let it be the ending but NO ). AUUUGGGHH!
And then theres Tom Waitswho Don claims is the man’s man speaker for his soul and he has me listen to this bit of genius, or that line of poetry. So I listen, incredulous, to Waits (admittedly unique and artistic) growling raspy voice and unexpected, unconventional lyrics and ask THATS your SOUL???? And Don laughs and kisses my hands or the arch of my foot or what ever is in reach and he says Oh honeyI know Im like a foreign movie and you wish you could just watch me in sub-titles sometimes And then he lovingly buys me the new Carly Simon cd because he knows her simple style can comfort the “chick music” part of my soul.
He holds my hand while we watch Turner Classic movies and is stunned to find that while I can appreciate the amazing acting–I HATE every single character and the whole dysfunctional story of Whos Afraid of Virginia Wolff. He laughs as I shoot sideways glares at him during particularly disturbing and screaming dialogs. That is so BRILLIANT! How can you NOT love that? he cries. I stare at him balefully.
Then he brings home The Illusionist for me, and holds my hand through that movie as well. Luscious, enjoyable .not brilliant. he says. I agree, because sometimes he can be right.
We share our boys, life concerns, laughter, intuitions/observations about our friends, the subtle oddities, humor and tragedy in human nature, our love of good food, great art, travel, and theatre.
But he is Jackson Pollock to my John Singer Sargent. He craves stark simplicity, I collect stuff. He spent 10 years in college, I spent two. He’s a UPSman, I design theatre costumes. He likes the desert, I like the woods. He likes stimulating controversial argument, I like peaceful agreement to disagree. He likes the morning, I come alive at night. He runs, I walk.
We are happy opposites who thoroughly and lovingly agree that finding each other in this huge wide world of possibilities was the very best thing that could have ever happened to both of us.

finally, a smile for and from me…this entry did it! How wonderful to exist in happiness and how wonderful to truly appreciate and revel in each other’s opposites. One never knows where or within whom one finds the other half of their heart and soul. You and I are such fortunate women:::love to you:::

sweet 🙂 he’s right about Mahler (though you certainly have a point there about the false endings!), but you’re right about Tom Waits.

The relationship the two of you have sounds just what I hope to find one day. It’s so nice to read this.

At first I thought you said YoMama and I was all, WHAT?! But I’ve caught up, I’m back now. 🙂 Yay for you! Be well,

How absolutely wonderful for the two of you. 🙂

ryn The new proof copy of the poetry book came today–just now 🙂 The cover looks fine this time! YEA! It has equal white margin at the top and bottom and slightly narrower white margins on each side and is centered on the front cover board. The spine of course makes it have more white on that side, as it should be. Only paperbacks or a one piece cover art would make it look truly centered onthe book. And that would be odd when one held it or opened it. It looks great! No crop marks or anything that shouldn’t be there. Do you need to see a scan of it or anything before I place the bulk order for books? We’re both thrilled that you and Trevor enjoy the herbs! I’ll return to note your entry. Great Hugs 😀 😀

I adore you both. I love your disparate souls. I like Don even more now that i know he is a Tom Waits fan. My father loved Tom Waits, though he couldn’t understand WHY he loved him. This is one of the most beautiful entries of yours I’ve ever read, and I ALWAYS think your entries are beautiful. ryn: I am fine. I just need not to be on Open Diary right now. I’m keeing myself to myself, am writing “true” poetry in a workshop, plowing through fiction, gently nagging my child and loving on her, etc. It’s debilitatingly cold here lately. So cold school was canceled and might be canceled again tomorrow. love you, elizabeth

And that’s the way love should be!

sweet to see how two souls work it out and acknowledge each other, appreciate the differences, and still laugh.

Aw…and wow! What a fine, compatible photo, both of you healthy and good looking, attached at the hip. : ) I’m glad that you have found contentment. I love the descriptions of your opposing tastes. PS…thanks for all of your kind concerns. I know you’re out there, and it’s wonderful.

L and i are finding some of the same empty nest wonders you and D are. I however enjoy the kids being gone and L wishes she had more time with them. I find no honesty in movies as all is exagerated to reflect the view of the author or director and miss the reality of life. I guess that’s the escape from truth that people look for. How you described life and love in this excerpt is real to me. BRO

How fortunate you are to have each other 🙂

I’m a rabid Tom Waits fanatic, and my husband can’t stand to hear him sing. He used to have a very bad habit of falling asleep on the couch, and I cured him of it by playing “Innocent When You Dream” every time he did. Oddly he really loves to SEE Tom Waits in stuff, because he’s interesting and hilarious, but can’t abide his singing voice. I can’t abide hearing Yes sing, so both are banned from our shared music listening. It’s so nice when you can work these things out happily!

What a tender, sweet, loving entry. I so understand the attraction of opposites, crazy and frustrating though it sometimes is. RYN: Thanks for stopping by and for your kind words!

Oh sweet friend, you misunderstood what I wrote. People TOLD Chuck they left private notes because they didn’t want other people to know they were writing him. That’s totally different. I believe there are great reasons to leave private notes. I do it all the time, especially if it’s a private message. Some of our friendships are just not everybody else’s business, yanno?

RYN: V+A – Victoria and Albert Museum – just the building alone is beautiful – it’s next to the Science and the Natural History Museum should you be going museum crazy but more to the point it’s also a pleasant stroll from Harrods – what more could any woman want. http://www.vam.ac.uk And thank you for being so understanding about y’know, the thing!

I know yin and yang – at it’s best, it can’t be beat! RYN: I LOVED The Chorus — I’d forgotten about it, and your note brought back the joy of it. Thank you.

I assume you love birds flamingo and roadrunner both love the mountains, yes? You seem to have just the right blend of alike/opposite to stimulate your relationship. Oh, HAHAHAH! One day, we’ll have to share a blade and a pillow over Charles Ay yi yives! I am SO glad Yeem isn’t a fan of his, but he IS a fan of Gravel Waits, and old blues, and very, very weird, WEIRD stuff, by obscure people – he LOVES obscure, often stuff. I don’t mind, and we do share classical tastes, but he detests the Rock, Alternative, and New Age stuff I so crave. By the way, please forgive me for inquiring *wapping self with wet noodle*, but TEN YEARS of COLLEGE?!? ACK! What was Don studying? Was this part-time or full time??
