Beached
So this last wave of high school theatre washed me up on shore and has left me inert for awhile. Ive taken some time to recover from waaaaay too much fun!
We did the original melodrama from the 1800s called Under the Gaslight. The costumes were deliciously fussylots of bustles, bows and frilly hats. Guys in top hats and tails and white spats, dock-boys in knickers and flat caps and of course the quintessential villain with his red-lined cape and handlebar mustache. It was all very fun and high energy with choreographed over-exaggerated movements, terrible but funny over-acting, and raucous vaudeville skits between acts. This time, as well as being consumed with costumes, I helped with painting the sets. These were also done in the 1800s style with a painted proscenium, and seven 8’x16 backdrops. Many, many (fun but exhausting) hours with incredible kids.
The show was over my birthday weekend and the kids were delightful and loving. Couldnt have asked for a better gift!
I am not going to costume direct the next small spring play (other than on-call consulting)but am leaving it in the capable hands of a talented student.
Instead, I am tucking myself into my studio and working exclusively on an illustration project that has me incredibly excited. The muses are chanting and taunting and pulling at my fingers(not unlike a few of the sprites that I am sketching on the page!!!)
And IF all the stars align, you can bet you will be hearing all about it!

Gorgeous as usual! I was showing my sister-in-law your site, as she’s done costumes in her time, too. This year, she had only to rent costumes for Oklahoma!… that’s what a private school will do for you.

The amount of work that goes into a production like this is amazing. You’re a special person to contribute so much energy and time. RYN: Of course, being the whiner that I am, I don’t stop to think about it quite that way. Thank you for reminding me that the stent is there for a purpose, not just to make my life miserable. Love,

Love the costumes AND the speculation on your age! LOL! God bless the child who says you’re 35. Tell all the teachers to give that kid an “A”. 🙂 RYN: Well, if ya gotta get beached, it might as well be on a pretty one! 🙂

RYN: Thanks, dear Kari. It’s been a rough couple of years for me.
