My night to cook
The call came at 5 PM. Tonight as I was about to leave work. Bring home two large pizzas as MB and her children are here and it is your night to cook. MB is my daughter and her husband travels extensively on business. With three children ranging from 5 years to 15 months she can have her hands full and so we try to have her visit any time we can. She lives only 8 miles from us and it is an easy drive. I try to give her the impression that I like doing this for her but the overriding reason is I love the children. It astonished me to see that even as young as a month old they all had individual personality traits and continue to develop in this manner. The house seems to come to life when they are here and so do I. My daughter is a bit of a scatterbrain who always loses car keys, check books, mac cards and patience. She is also bright, witty and loving but definitely high maintenance. I almost burst with pride one night when I overheard her tell a girlfriend, “My Dad is a resource I can count on any time for any thing.” I almost looked around to see whom she was talking about. What a difference a few years have made in her opinion of me. Also in my own opinion of me if I were to be completely honest. When they left the night was just a little bit darker and cooler but they left me a much happier person.
I seem to be rambling on tonight about simple events and simple pleasures. I have learned that there is so much enjoyment in grasping a moment like tonight and experiencing it to the fullest Most of my life was spent chasing transitory pleasures selfishly and being left with a feeling of self revulsion and guilt. I am so grateful that God has seen fit to bless me with so many great gifts rather than giving me what I deserve. If I had gotten what I deserved or had earned what a sorry life I would be living.
