Muzak (NJM14)
Spent some time this evening driving back and forth to middle son’s college, to pick him up and bring him home for the night – he just needs to pick some things up for an audition on Thursday. There were a couple of my favorite songs on the radio – I was thinking, how strange, what radio has become. It used to be THE medium for entertainment not that long ago (60-70 years), and now, the only time people listen to it is when they are in the car. And in the case of my family (and most, I think), that is being replaced by listening to iPods and CDs. I know (because I was a Telecommunications major, and I studied things like this) that there were people in the 40’s and 50’s that said TV would never replace the radio as the main form of in-home entertainment.
Anyway, I fell WAY off the NoJoMo bandwagon, so you may notice that I am blathering a bit to try to catch up.
Filler for the day: Ten Songs That Force Me To Turn Up The Car Radio (in no particular order)
1. My Generation – The Who
2. American Idiot – Green Day
3. Are You Gonna Be My Girl – Jet
4. Slither – Velvet Revolver
5. Back In The U.S.S.R. – The Beatles (seriously, one of the only Beatles songs I like)
6. Fat-Bottomed Girls – Queen
7. What I Like About You – The Romantics
8. Hot For Teacher – Van Halen (although I could have just as easily said, Panama, So This Is Love, Beautiful Girls, or any track from Van Halen I)
9. Roadhouse Blues – The Doors (the live version from American Prayer)
10. Gimme Some Lovin – The Blues Brothers
Those are not by any means my ten favorite songs of all time – just the first ten I thought of when I thought of listening to the radio loud in the car. I probably wouldn’t have even included Back in the U.S.S.R., except I heard that in the car tonight, so it was in my head. Interesting that the "newest" song on the list is over five years old – there’s not much in popular music the last couple years that appeals to me, unfortunately.
Does that make me an old geezer? More blather to come, later.
The DiaryMaster
no it doesnt make you an old geezer. i like number 2 and 3.
Warning Comment
Nah, not an old geezer, just very picky about the music you like. I’m like that…I can’t think of a song in the last few years that I actually would say I enjoy.
Warning Comment
hmmm. i sure hope not coz i like most of em
Warning Comment
Actually, if you were a teenager now, that would still be acceptable music to find cool. Very much so, even. At least in my school. That doesn’t mean you’re not old, though 😀
Warning Comment
the first part of the list does nothing for me. Track 1 is good, but wouldn’t make my list. But once it hits Back In The USSR, it’s solid gold.
Warning Comment
My spouse would love you for your music choices, I, however, will forgive you for half of it. ;o)
Warning Comment
I CRANKED the volume for “Sweet Emotion” earlier today — and always do. 🙂
Warning Comment
No Rolling Stones? Though I suppose they weren’t as big in America as they were here.
Warning Comment
MOST excellent list! :-0)

Not a geezer. Queens Greatest Hits is currently on my top rotation, and The Who were my first “favorite” band when I was 4 =)
Warning Comment
some good songs there! i loveeee jet! xx
Warning Comment
I am extremely picky about music as well. And I like everything from Patsy Cline to Marilyn Manson! 😉 xoxo

A bit of a geezer but then again anybody who is over the age of twenty is now a geezer. Jus can’t keep up with these darn kids and there playbox and there x-stations.
Warning Comment
I’m curious to know if you like Van Halen with Roth OR Hagar? I like Van Halen with Roth…but then again I really enjoyed some songs with Hagar.
Warning Comment
I find it odd that I actually LIKE some of the new music – the folky stuff anyway.
Warning Comment
geezer? Pffft! Not even close. My HUSBAND is a geezer, and –trust me– you don’t qualify. Not even close.
Warning Comment
You can’t be that old of a geezer if you have a mix of songs in there from different decades. 😉 I find that I am simply hearing less new music because of the iPod and CD’s! Granted, it seems like half the time I turn on the radio it sounds like some Nickelback or Blink182 clone (which seems odd given that these bands aren’t even close to being new…) but I have heard some pretty good new stuff here and there. Sadly, I am cheap about purchasing music so I haven’t explored it very much yet.

🙂

those are some good songs,
Warning Comment
You’ve got great taste, Master !

Number 3 and Number 6 are what I turn my radio up for and I am 24 :). Most of the stuff by Queen I turn up the radio for… my friends think its odd that I listen to the “oldies” but music is music! Who cares when generation it came from. 🙂
Warning Comment
Doesn’t make you an old geezer. Just means you’re not into mainstream modern stuff. There’s probably some more unknown bands that you’d enjoy.
Warning Comment
I am the old geezer as I don’t remember any of these songs. I was a teen during the Elvis and Beatles days. I am having a hard time twice in the last two weeks with ads that covers my sign in option and I cannot sign in when it pops up. I x it out and it pop right back up there. I thought thats why we paid not to have to put up with those crappy ads. Betty

By the way that Kevin Skinner who won on America’s got talent is from my home town of Mayfield and I love his music. You got to try his C D out when it gets out on the stands this year.I am a country music lover now but as a teen it was all different.
Warning Comment
I love all thosev songs 🙂
Warning Comment
I am a Who freak, seen them several times in their various incarnations, they still can rock. And I love Green Day. I like your picks, we have a similar taste in music. Might I add I Love Rock and Roll by Joan Jett?
Warning Comment
How can that be the only Beatles song you like???? I mean, I love that song, but they have so much awesome stuff! Although, I wonder – did people who grew up around the Beatles get sick of them? I’m a child of the 80/90ss, but my parents are rock musicians who grew up in the 60s and 70s so that’s what I was raised on. When I was in high school all I would listen to (in terms of pop music) were the Beatles, Queen, Simon and Garfunkel, etc. My parents are both still obsesssed with the Beatles, but maybe people who grew up wtih them aren’t as into them as I am (when compared to the crappy 90s pop everybody else I knew listened to). I know you’re not quite as old as my parents, btw 🙂
Warning Comment
there’s not much in popular music that interests me, either. take care,
Warning Comment
have to agree with you there aren’t many ‘great songs’ alot of good ones in the past 5+ years [in the Rock genre, now country diff story Several Excellent artists and songs] think alot of us are running out of steam on the NJM09 *sighs*
Warning Comment
I think 6 may be my favorite Queen song. That or Somebody to Love.
Warning Comment
I always wondered what communications majors studied. I still listen to the radio…. on the internet. Podcasts are a godsend.
Warning Comment
Queen on your list automatically makes you ok in my book.
Warning Comment
I could deal with the sound track albums to To Live and Die in L. A. and Blade Runner … turned up really loud. I got a $256 ticket for listening to the first one with the windows all rolled down.
Warning Comment
I dont listen to the radio anymore because of all the commercials and morning shows. Blah on that.
Warning Comment
Fat Bottomed Girls…
Warning Comment
I love Van Halen! Rock, man! 🙂
Warning Comment
Those are all new songs. 🙂
Warning Comment
Perhaps I am an old geezer but, even though I have been posting some esoteric and strange tunes in my diary lately, every one of these songs is pretty great.
Warning Comment
Are You Gonna Be My Girl, yes. American Idion, really?? I mean, really??
Warning Comment
Really….American Idiot…..*shrugs*
Warning Comment
they say people turn off popular music when they become 35. I have a habit of turning up songs i claim to hat. Like The Killers – Mr Brightside. It once came on teh radio and i said “oh, i hate this song” and then promptly turned it up, to the amazement of everyone in teh car withi me.
Warning Comment
Awesome songs all. I turn up my ipod when most of them come on as well.
Warning Comment
I’m in complete agreement with you with the songs you’ve mentioned here. The radio gets turned up, the foot starts tapping, and if I’m driving when one of them comes on I’ll do the butt-cheek dance. Don’t laugh… you know you do it, too! —
Warning Comment
The new song by Wheezer makes me crank it, not sure why. I believe we are about the same age. I agree with about half of your list. Not a big Van Halen…I think they are more of a guys band.
Warning Comment
Maybe I should have said group, not band, because I certainly didn’t mean they are a Boy Band.
Warning Comment
I would crank it for any AEROSMITH song for sure! Your list is a’ight…ha ha. Love Queen.
Warning Comment
I like the character counter for notes; it’s nifty. I have a question that has no bearing on anything: a few times, I’ve gone “into the red,” and the counter has shown me that I’m 3, 4, 5 characters over limit. When I’ve ignored it, figuring I’ll add a note to continue the thread, the overage is included. Are we getting free characters? That little bit of forgiveness is nice 🙂
Warning Comment
Do those songs make you an OLD GEEZER? Are you KIDDING? I’d listen to “Sh-Boom” by the Crewcuts, “The Wayward Wind” by Gogi Grant and “Beep Beep” by the Playmates!
Warning Comment
My son used to sing ” Are you going to be my girl ” at the age of 4 . I loved that !
Warning Comment
You’ve got good taste in music…! I don’t know why that surprises me so much…or why I’m openly admitting that it surprises me… Ooops. *laughs*
