New Note Counter (NJM6)

This one has a little business in it – so that first.

The Admins and I have been testing a new character counter for leaving notes, because there have historically been problems with how the old one counted lines in notes.  Quite often, if you left a long note before, the counter would be inaccurate – this was mostly because the counter counted an incorrect number of characters for what happened when you hit Enter for a new line.  I’ve put in a new counter tonight that is more accurate – it counts those lines better, which is good.  I’m still working on a couple other aspects of the accuracy, so it is probably still possible to throw it off if you try hard – but it is much better than what we had before.

We also had a discussion while we were testing about how notes handle Returns in a note.  OD has always (in the past) inserted a blank line when you pressed Enter in a note, leaving blank space between the two lines.  This was kind of annoying, because it meant the note saved looking different from how it looked when you typed it.  I’ve changed this so that now you just get a new line when you hit Enter, rather than a blank line.  That means that if you truly want a blank line in your note, you will have to hit Enter twice – but it also means that you can start a new line without a blank one, and your note will look like it did when you were typing it after it saves.  Hope that makes sense, because it’s kind of late.

Now for the fun part (because I couldn’t call this a NoJoMo entry if it was all business).  I promised pictures of our two new rescue kittens earlier, so here they are:

We don’t normally take pictures of brand new kittens until we are pretty sure that they are going to survive, because frankly, nobody wants to see pictures of kittens that have passed away come up on their screensaver.  The striped one was pretty sick with an upper respiratory infection for several days, but he has been taking amoxicillin and is doing much better.  His name was inspired by his stuffy nose – he’s named "Tuffy".

Shortly after we had decided on Tuffy for his name, one of the kids asked what the other one’s name was, and as a joke I said, "Black Tuffy" (naturally).  Of course, the name stuck – so now we have Tuffy and Black Tuffy.  Which sounds ridiculous, but at least it gets a laugh every time.  Black Tuffy has started eating solid food as of a couple days ago, so that is a big step – just like babies, it’s a happy day when you can stop bottle-feeding them every four hours.  They are also just starting to chase each other and chase toys a little bit, which is really cute.

Seriously, if anybody has any suggestions for a good name for a black kitten, let me know – I don’t think we can adopt him out as "Black Tuffy", but we haven’t come up with anything that fits him yet.

I hope this is the first note on this entry!

November 6, 2009

I like the sound of the new note system, does this also mean that it will create a new leave a note link earlier than the 9 notes or 50 or so lines of text as before?

November 6, 2009

That is a look of pure mischief on his face, so I’m leaning towards naming him Loki. So adorable, both of them!

Good thing about the notes counter! Thanks And how about “Wuffy” for the kitty’s name? No, actually that sounds like a dog name… or “Muffy”…

How about Orix. Orix Buffaloes are a Japanese Baseball team that Tuffy Rhodes (ex Cubs & Red Sox player) is now with. (He’s also African American, but that obviously is neither here nor there.) I was going to suggest calling him Karl, because that’s Tuffy Rhodes’ first name, but that’s like calling a dog Steve.

November 6, 2009

nawww, so cute!

November 6, 2009

Gorgeous kittens! I especially like the little black one 🙂 The new note counter sounds cool. I often wondered about the number of characters when you hit return.

November 6, 2009

I always thought Omen would be a good name for a black cat.

November 6, 2009

These are so cute! I’ve had 3 black kittens, 2 male and 1 female. The female I called Kisa, which is a Japanese anime character that turns into a cat. The male black cats I’ve called Dante – from Dante’s Inferno and Tybalt – from Romeo and Juliet. xx

November 6, 2009

What about “Spooky” or “Spooks” or even Spock!! Lololol. Cutiepies those two!!

November 6, 2009

Congrats on the new kittehs!

November 6, 2009

I’ve just adopted a kitten too. Congratulations. I’m wondering what i ever did to keep busy before!

November 6, 2009

I can`t believe no one has suggested Buffy yet.

November 6, 2009

The black cat we had when I was a child was named “Nuisance”…. a good name for any pet come to think of it.

November 6, 2009

Nero is Italian for black. How about Nero?

November 6, 2009

HAH.CUTE. i like black tuffy. except tuffy is cute too, very, but black tuffy is soooo cute. not one tiny little bit of white on him?? usually there is somewhere. well i’d probly call him sweetie pie. no. thats horrible. bad. shadow is too expected. maybe call him whitey. knew a goldfish named whitey, everyone was trying to kill whitey… and they did. thats probly no good. “holden” “larry” dk

November 6, 2009

Oh my god! Does this mean I can give up my habit of ending every single note with a manually-entered <BR>? I dunno, DM, I’ve been doing it for so long that I’m not sure I’ll be able to do it. It’s going to feel funny for a long time. I tend toward ironic names like “Squirt” for Great Danes and “Snow” for black cats, so maybe you shouldn’t ask me. One birthday, I asked for apet skunk named Rose. I’m not kidding. —

The black one is just adorable. I have a soft spot in my heart for all black cats, particularly after losing mine last year. You could name him Jett, and I would be honored to share my loving cat’s name with such a cute rescue kitty.

November 6, 2009

Call him Boo or Jellybean!

November 7, 2009

Oh. My. God. That black kitten is absolutely adorable. I had a black kitty named Magic once, I thought that was a pretty decent name. ^_^ The new counter looks different as I’m typing! Ah! Also, I used to only hit enter once to conserve that precious one character, I usually leave really long notes. ^_^ ~

November 7, 2009

We called our all-black kitten “Kiwi”, we thought it was funny since the “all blacks” are a rugby team from New Zealand, and New Zealanders are nicknames Kiwis… Hmmm, seems too random now I’ve had to explain it! How about mystic or magic, or something witchy?

November 7, 2009

Call it almost because it almost didn’t make it

November 7, 2009

I second ‘BUFFY’ as a cats name 🙂

For the black kitty’s name, how about Shadow?

Awww, cute. 🙂 Someone else came up with the name I liked. So I second “Shadow”.

Awww… adorable kitties! Have had a black cat named “Midnight”, and also “Daisy” before, which makes no sense on her color! 🙂 And of course, Tuffy is precious as well.

November 7, 2009

Adorable!

‘sooty’

November 7, 2009

Black cat… “Blue”… for his eyes.

November 7, 2009

I’m thinking you should abbreviate Black Tuffy into Buffy. (Not as in the girl’s name, Buffy, of course…but as in, he’s so tough he’s buff!) ;o)

November 7, 2009

The black one is too cute! I’m hoping my next pair of cats will black.

November 7, 2009

Basement Cat, Shadow, Sniffles

November 7, 2009

For some reason, when I was reading this, I thought you said his name was “Shorty.” I kind of liked it, then noticed that I read it wrong. They are both so cute!

November 7, 2009

How about Black Magic (Magi for short)? He looks like a Halloween kitty to me!

November 7, 2009

what darling kittens!! midnight would be a good name for the black one. thanks for the improvement on the note counter. take care,

November 7, 2009

awwwww…..babies!!!

November 7, 2009

how about puppy, that would annoy people as well.

November 7, 2009

Considering we don’t end up adopting out our rescues, over the years, since I was young, my family and I have had a multitude of black cats. Andy, Nero, Micio, Fluff (not a name for this little one), Bandit (named after the white ring on his tail), Shadow… and many more. I have no idea. They’re both adorable!

November 7, 2009

Dear DM, I have one entry “UPDATING” in my diary. can u pl see that and reply me..

November 7, 2009

Onyx

Ha! Tuffy and Black Tuffy. 🙂

I had a solid black cat we named Zorro, and trust me, he fit the name just fine!

November 7, 2009

How about Bagheera? We used to have a black cat named that and of course he ended up being called “Baggy” for short.

November 7, 2009

I love the name Black Tuffy. We had a cat which was called Muffy. And another all black cat called Tuppy.

November 7, 2009

My husband said name him “13”.

Cute kitties!! I love their names! 🙂

November 7, 2009

awwwww… the cutest!

November 7, 2009

They’re so cute!

KITTIES!!!! So cute 🙂

November 7, 2009

I think leinad suggested an interesting one…Orix, since it has a connection with Tuffy still..hehe. I also think Jasper is a cute name for a black kitty :c)

November 7, 2009

I always wanted a black cat named Ninja. You can steal that if you want. He looks like he’s got the attitude for it!

You could call him Midnight,Salem,I had a similar black cat that I called Froto. Probably sounds kinda stupid but he was the runt of the bunch.

November 7, 2009

name him Cyprus.. ya know how they always talk about egyptians and them being buried with their cats? well, in ’04, they found a grave in Shillourokambos, Cyprus that had human and feline skeletons, laid close to one another. the grave is around 9,500 years old.. the oldest before that, was 3,600 years. i don’t think you should name him buffy.. 😛

November 7, 2009

My friend Leinad thinks calling a dog Steve is weird, but I love the idea of calling that cat Steve. Black Tuffy is nice too, but he could really be a Steve I think. So cute!!

November 7, 2009

Why does leinad know about baseball in Japan, I wonder?

November 7, 2009

I pretty much just DIED….that picture is adorable. Tuffy reminds me of a kitten I had as a kid (who was my faithful cat for many years) but oh my goodness, Black Tuffy is adoable – what a great pose! I love his blue eyes and little tongue 😀 Yay for the new note counter – can you PLEASE do something like this for the entry counter???? There have been times it has told me up to 1000 characters were left, but it still cut something off. Or better yet, remove the limitation on entry character counts in general? We had a black cat named Tabitha – after Samantha’s daugter in Bewitched.

November 7, 2009

i like spook, spooky etc b/c so close 2 halloween or my thought was midnight

They are just so adorable!!! The name of our first dog happened the same way. Somebody made a joke and she was Tonto for 14 years! 🙂

I think leiand’s suggestion is brilliant… 🙂

Buffy 🙂

My Granny’s black cat was named Sooty. Our new kitten, also black, is named Mittens (belongs to my daughter who is only 5 years old hehe!) Both kittens are ADOREABLE.

They are ADORABLE. I love kitten/cats. But don’t ask me for names…my husbands cat was named KITTY, and when we got our kitten I specifically said “we are not calling her “kitten” and guess what, her name is KITTEN! It just stuck..you’ll find something that sticks..lots of good suggestions though by everyone! Just had to press return to try out the new note thingy! Thanks! Beckie

November 7, 2009

Thanks for the note news. ‘Tuffy is cute, but you are going to have to name the other one based on his personality.

November 7, 2009

omigod they are SO CUTE – and that’s funny about the names 🙂

From a childrens’ book I used to read to my son – Tar. Tar was a sea-going cat as tar means sailor. (The book was about what happened to each kitten in a large litter and now I will have to do a search on that book to rediscover the title.) Also, tar is a black substance. Here’s wishing for smooth sailing for both kitties, Tuffy and Tar sounds good, don’t you think?

November 7, 2009

those kitties are adorable.

What beautiful babies! Makes me want to take them in, and I already have two grown cats and a boxer. LOL

November 7, 2009

EEEE KITTIES! So cute. Glad that they’re doing well.

Awww…! The kittens are adorable. 🙂 I think I’ll leave the naming bit to everyone else though…seems like you’ve already gotten quite a few suggestions! *laughs & smiles* Take good care!

How about Taffy? Then they’d be a little tag team: “Tuffy and Taffy.” Any name you are considering should be spoken out loud. “Here Tuffy Tuffy Tuffy.” That’s the only way to properly test out a name. Reject any name that’s going to be “shortened” into something else, that’s just a waste. ** Can you make the notes a little longer? 400 characters just isn’t enough. Some of us are quite yakky. 😉

November 7, 2009

I’m not very good at naming animals, but Black Tuffy is adorable!!! Thanks for the working note counter! As an OD+ member, I always hated when I’d max out a note’s characters and then after I posted the note, I’d see that the last whole line or so didn’t show up because the “enters” didn’t count right. So thank you for doing an awesome job!!!

November 7, 2009

I once had a black cat, her name was Jinx. You have a boy though so maybe Bluff for Black Tuffy?

November 7, 2009

What would be nice, ..if you run out of characters in your note, that whats typed after it hits 400…it automatically putting the text into a second note….third, fourth…so on. Now that would be great. Its kind of hard to save the note, then look again what was the last thing you wrote and then go to the next note to write.

November 7, 2009

Oh the kittens are cute 🙂 What about Midnight as a name for the black one? Take care!

November 7, 2009

I have to suggest raiven.. thats my baby girls name but it fits so perfectly for him. I also noticed he has his cute lil mouth open and I thought of “quote the raiven never more” if I was closer I would adopt them both because raiven needs some play partners!!

November 7, 2009

Scout, Platinum, Midnight, Jupiter, Roarson, Daft, Mr. Meow, Duncan, Oogie, Ghost, Lump (all cats eventually turn into one of those), Terror, Pounce, Meowy Meowerson, Shadow, Mr. Robinson, Little Rainbow Warrior, Fluffhead, Poof, Ghoul, Reaper, Dakitten, Schmuky, Saucers, Zeus.

November 7, 2009

Stemming off a previous noters “Magic”, I’ll throw Trance into the name pile 🙂

November 7, 2009

They are so cute! I vote for Frank because of his blue eyes. I’ve got a female tabby called Lottie and we’ve said that when we get a male cat we’re going to call it Nigel. Its just a quality name for a cat! xxx

Awww! kittens! LOL!

November 7, 2009

OMG the black one is adorable! They both are, of course, but he’s just gorgeous and photogenic! We had a black cat named Kingsford (like the charcoal) when I was a kid.

November 7, 2009

Brilliant….I found that, in the notes, very annoying! Having to use html…to try and get the blank lines where I wanted them. So that’s great, thank you! and the kittens are very cute …love the one on the left ^^….

November 7, 2009

mischief hehe he looks like a bundle of mischief

November 7, 2009

You could get a third kitten and name him Patrick Tuffy.

Awww how cute!

November 7, 2009

Other names are fun, but I like to make sure to cater to what a kitty will respond best to. Cats respond most to names that end in an ‘ee’ sound. I have used this as a basis to name all of my cats and they all respond very well to their names, as a result. It would be good to keep in mind. 🙂

November 7, 2009

I’m glad somebody else suggested Frank, because I WAS going to suggest Sinatra because I was so stricken by those blue eyes 🙂

November 7, 2009

The problem with that Asillia is that all kitties/babies are born with blue eyes and for most that will change to another color once they are no longer kittens. 🙂

November 7, 2009

Absolutely precious!! I love cats. 🙂

November 7, 2009

Black + Tuffy= BUFFY!

November 7, 2009

Licorice! It’s easier to say than black strap molasses 😉

November 7, 2009

Line breaks instead of paragraph tags. Got it. 🙂 “Black Tuffy.” That’s awesome.

Lookit those pretty blue eyes! Sapphire!

November 7, 2009

They are just gorgeous!! Black Tuffy is a fab name. lol. I’ve adopted a new kitty from a rescue today!

November 7, 2009

OMG! Those kittens are adorable! As for name suggestions, I suggest either Binx or Salem. Binx was the name of the black cat in Hocus Pocus. Salem was the name of Sabrina’s cat. I’m a pop culture fanatic at times.

November 7, 2009

We recently lost our black cat to the big litter box in the sky. His name was Talerian. You can use it if you like.

November 7, 2009

I love the black kitty! But they are both so adorable! Oh how I miss having a cat around! ~*Samantha*~

November 7, 2009

That little black one looks like a baby bear….:)

November 7, 2009

Buffy cause he is Black and Tuffy.

Buffy? lol Buffy and Tuffy… thats so cute.

November 7, 2009

i want black tuffy! our black cat’s name is liquorice, but she gets tiny cat (coz we had big cat and little cat already when we got her.. i tried to resist the tiny cat moniker but it stuck) you know, I would really like it if u stopped restricting the notes at all, myself.

November 7, 2009

aaawww they are too cute! im terrible with naming pets, my yorkie is named dude!

I’m not saying its original or anything, but when I was little and we got a black kitten I looked in a thesaurus under “black”. We named our kitten Ebony.

November 7, 2009

we have rabbits that used to go as simply “the white one” and “the grey one” oh, i like spock for a name because its like dean’s cat from the comic strip ‘heart of the city’

Call him Inky! Or you could call them Tuffy & Scruffy and try to get someone to take them both because, after all, their names rhyme.

November 7, 2009

Ninja!

No wait! Call him Darth!!!! Do it! C’mon…what a cool name for a kitten, right?

Can you please implement some sort of screening process for the entries on Reader’s Choice? There are some ridiculous jerks that get their entries posted to the front page who certainly do not deserve it, like the person who is on there now. I just think there needs to be an electoral process of some sort, that way we can weed out the nonsense things that have nothing to do with Reader’s Choice.

November 7, 2009

Name Black tuffy “Mystic” It’s cool and it’ll fit the sweetie. Hugs~

Did you have to post pictures? Now I want to adopt one even more & you’ve yet to respond to any of my notes. Oh well they are adorable. As far as names for the little guy: Midnight Onyx Sam (because I think it’s a cute name for such a little guy). Have a good weekend.

November 7, 2009

We currently have two black cats, one is named Maya because is a Burmese and the other is Echo because she looks exactly like the first one. We also have three other cats, one named Thumbalina because she has six toes on her front paws and one looks like a thumb; Razzy because she’s a rascal and Moxie because she’s full of moxie. Your little black kitty could be anything. Get to know the kitten before picking a name because anything could fit. We never go with the generic names for animals.

November 7, 2009

CAIRO!!! call the black one cairo after me! and cairo!! omg they’re so CUTE!!

November 7, 2009

Oh, I like the idea of Nero. That’s just gorgeous.

November 7, 2009

Tuffy and Black Tuffy are adorable!!!! And their names make me laugh, heh.

November 7, 2009

i had a black cat named Panther

Yay for the kittens!! 🙂 now off to read the entry!

November 8, 2009

Riley. Liffy. Finnegan (bit of a mouthful. Finn for short!). 😉

Awwww they are so cute!!! We have been talking about adding a baby kitten to our family lately. I think that might happen when I get back home in December. I don’t have a name suggestion..had it been up to me our Sterling would have been named Batman, lol.

November 8, 2009

Squidge! I have no idea why but he looks like that name would suit him!

November 8, 2009

OMG those kittens are adorable! I am such a sucker for kittens… I have 8 cats now – two which have been hand raised from just a few days old. Glad yours survived. I’ve never been able to let them go once they get into my house, so I have to be careful not to take one in unless I plan on keeping it. Looking forward to hearing the name that got chosen. Enjoy your day!

I’m soon to be in the market for a kitten because my dog is becoming quite old. I haven’t decided whether to get a kitten now or to wait until my old girl goes. I normally adopt adult animals, but I’d love to start with a kitten this time in order to have longer years with it. Sigh. —

EWS
November 9, 2009

For the black kitten, I suggest “Chocolate Cupcake” or “Cocoa”. 🙂 Eric

November 11, 2009

They’re adorable! M

November 16, 2009

re notes being truncated: I hate to be critical of your efforts (thanks for trying to fix this) but it’s no better, really. The point is, you never know how many characters will be truncated, and that’s still true. The first time I tried it, I filled the note until the counter said 0 left, then posted the note. 55 characters got lopped off. Why don’t you just leave the counter as it was, stop accepting keystrokes at 1200, and send the result to your database, however long it now appears to be (or, put an internal limit of, say 2000 characters). Then nothing should get cut off. But I don’t know VB (if that’s what you use) maybe there’s some reason that wouldn’t work. Davo

How are the kittens & did you choose a new name for the black one?

November 18, 2009

The kittens are adorable!!! 🙂

*tx
November 19, 2009

Eclipse .. or Tux (short for Tuxedo)

November 20, 2009

our black cat is named midnight.

Licorice comes to mind…Black Tuffy made me think of black taffy (which I don’t think they make), which made me think of candy, etc….lol As for names, we once had a huge dog adopt us (translation: he jumped into the back of the pick-up truck and no one wanted to try and make him get out, so we brought him home) that my mom named Dog-Dog. When asked why, she simply replied, “Because he’s too darn big to be just one dog!”

That black kitty is too cute. We had a black one that was named Samara once. Rose

Awwwww! I want the kitties!

Yay Kittens!! ^_^

November 22, 2009

Never mind the counter for notes. Why is the counter for entries about 1000 characters off?

November 22, 2009

don’t know if you named the black one but Panther sounds good. He does look like a miniture panther.

November 23, 2009

Devil! Or Diablo if you want to make it sound less evil.

November 27, 2009

I am writing on behalf of our od member Kate D Her last entry was in Sept. and she cannot get her problems here resolved; I don’t know more than this–re: facebook I wrote to ask her if all was well, regarding no entries, and she related her problems to me. Apparently now she is no longer receiving answers to her notes to tech help. Could someone give this another try? She’d appreciate it andI would too. Sago/formerly mags… ps: those kittens make me curse my allergy to cat dander!

Onyx or Vader. 🙂

December 1, 2009

I have been trying to “write an entry” for two days. Someone needs to fix something.

December 2, 2009

you could name him Smidge cause he is no bigger than a smidgen!
