Diary Import and the Utilities Page

I was going to call it the OD Bat Utility Belt, but that was trying too hard, I think.

Anyways, there’s a new page on the site, the Open Diary Utilities page – you can find it by clicking the Help menu and then Open Diary Utilities (go figure). The first new item on the Utilities page is the just-released Diary Import Utility. This piece of software has been eagerly awaited for the last few months, by at least three people.

The Diary Import Utility allows you to combine two diaries (both owned by you) into one diary. To accomplish this, unlock the diary that you want to be the merged diary, go to the Diary Import page, and follow the directions. This utility will import all the entries and (optionally) all the notes from another diary into your current diary. Please note that the imported entries will be placed at the beginning of the merged diary, with all you current entries moved to the end. Dates will not be changed, and entries will not be combined into date order.

I know that there are many extra diaries out there from the FOD/OD days, when some authors were keeping a separate diary on each site. This program will let you bring those diaries back together into one place. Also, you can use the import utility to combine as many diaries as you want – just remember that each time you import another diary, it will be placed at the beginning of the merged diary.

EDIT: I had a question about merging diaries – you are not required to do this, and yes, you can still keep two diaries (or however many you have) if you wish. This is just for your convenience, if you want to use it.

The other item on the Utilities page is a program called WordWax. This is something that was developed by a member of our community, and allows you to write and post entries without actually entering the Open Diary site. This program has already been used by many (or several, or thousands – I don’t really know) of our users. Please remember – this program is not supported by OD, so if you have any questions about it, ask the author – don’t ask me.

If you have a tool or utility that you’ve used with your diary and liked, let me know about it – and I may add it to the Utilities page.

EDIT (AGAIN): I’ve had a lot of questions about when the Diary Chapters will be available for Plus users. I worked on this code all last week, and am testing it now. It should be out sometime this week, as long as testing goes well.

when will the chapters option be available for us OD+ people? Just curious.

I used to keep an FOD diary but downloaded it to disk. I’d like to put it on the front end of my current diary – is this likely to be possible?

Out of interest, when will the expired diaries be deleted?

I’m not getting a Utilities option under the help menu. Has this been taken down already? I’ll check back again later.

I don’t show “Open Diary Utilities”… is this only for the paid version? I wanted to import the text-saved diary i had a couple of years ago. Is this not possible for FODers? Thanks.

ok…so sometimes i’m on some open diary page, and my web browser window will randomly shrink to half size and then disappear!! wth is up with that?? *CONFUSED*

I’m a little confused about which one is the merged diary…the one you want to keep or the one you want to move . . . I plan on merging when my subscription is up.

I have an idea- How ’bout you use a reader’s password one time to get into somebody’s diary? Not every time they update, ya know? It could be a password which entitles somebody to keeo you on their favorites or something, even if you’re not a paying ODer and would like to read. It’s a pain in the ass to re-type their name and password each time, especially with multiple favorites & pop-ups. 🙂

the help menu I click doesn’t have Open Diary Utilities on it. and WOO HOO! regarding chapters.

I’ve tried emailing the help section and have heard nothing. I asked about when marking entries to private, that were previously public, how can I make the notes on those entries private too? They still show under “show all notes” Peace…

Hey..I’m having a bit of a problem with my diary… I cant space out my entries. I go onto a new line by pressing enter when I’m typing it out, but when it saves,the whole entry looks like one long paragraph.It happens on both Internet Explorer and Access 550 browsers. What to do ? 🙂

Can you make a page that has HTML help stuff… With like codes us, the users, can use for our diary to make them better. I.E. like an image code, or the marquee code, and so forth! Thanks it would be greatly appreciated!

I know you don’t check your notes regularly, but this isn’t a technicaly question or a rules violation, so I don’t want to use those channels of communication. Is there any way to switch the remainder of an existing subscription over to a new diary? I think someone I know IRL is stalking me via my diary, and I don’t want to go private or favorites only.

I was wondering if you are the person who has been leaving me notes on my diary without singing your name. If so why do you keep doing it. I am not a bad person if it was you doing it. I just want to know why. Plus I have not been taking others stuff. I don’t claim they are mine if you understand what I mean.

I hope I will still be able to use OD. If things were mind I would say so. You know I do say the site I got something from or I say the person I got it from. Let me know if it was you doing it ok.

I have a cool idea. Next time you get a minute to make cool new stuff for the diaries, you could create a rate-a-diary function. Something optional for every diary; readers could rate your whole diary and/or single entries on a scale of one to ten. Viewing your ratings could appear on a diarist’s front page or could be avaliable for private viewing only.

hi… the editor for writing an entry is perpetually turned off???? when willl it come on? i dun’t like to write with the other format. thanks.

someone left a note on my diary that is all black and says cool up in the top left corner…it wont let me see my notes page with that or the entry that it was left on…how do i get rid of it?

So there’s no way of merging diaries and keeping the entries in the correct order?
