On Being Logged Out Unexpectedly

Hello everybody,

I’ve been receiving a lot of complaints from people who are being logged out of the system when they click on links within the site. After I checked through all of the site for code problems that might cause this behavior, I realized that there was a simpler explanation.

There are many people who are still accessing the site by using the old http://www.freeopendiary.com or http://www.opendiaryplus.com addresses. Since the upgrade, all the links in the site have been set to use opendiary.com only. At the same time, I’ve set our servers so they recognize the old addresses as the address for this site.

This works fine except for one thing: if you come to this site under freeopendiary.com, log in, and then click on a link that points to a page at opendiary.com, you will be logged out. This is a little confusing, since technically the page at freeopendiary.com/anypage and at opendiary.com/anypage are the same page.

However, when you log in at one domain (freeopendiary.com) and then switch to another (opendiary.com), your web browser considers it a different site and all security information associated with the first site is ignored.

I hope that made more sense than I think it did.

In any case, if you are still using the http://www.freeopendiary.com or http://www.opendiaryplus.com address to access the site, cut it out. You will suffer from this logout problem. The only address you should be using (regardless of your OD membership type) is http://www.opendiary.com. That address works for everybody, and it is the address all of our pages are designed to use.

Also, check any bookmarks or links you have on your own webpages, and make sure they point to opendiary.com. That should ensure that this doesn’t happen to you.

dm, that note I left yesterday about entries timing out and not saving, happened again…it’s reaaaaaaaaaaaally annoying :-/ please fix it!

What about that URL you gave the plus members to avoid popups at all times? Does that URL recognize not to randomly log people out?

I wrote you an e-mail quite a while ago about importing my old OD plus into my new one…when can I expect to be able to do this? Thanks for your help.

The option to choose ‘no notes’ on an entry no longer exists? That may be vague: in the old version, we had the option to allow readers to leave notes, or we could choose ‘no notes’, entry by entry, instead of having to make the entire journal ‘no notes’. Apparently that isn’t so anymore?

Ok, that is great, but what about the problems with the WYSIWYG thing. I get booted, then I have to totally do a new entry if it had pics in it? Why is that? Also, will there be a character limit in the WYSIWYG view? Desperatly need it if you can! 🙂 Thanks for all the good work!

When you going to change that note counter to stop showing private notes?

BTW, it’s Sunday night, 11pm or so and I’m getting error pages – cannot find etc. Not sure if its my servers or yours.

I have a problem, in that I’m a new diarist here, I have PAID my money for this diary and I’m not getting all of the features. I can’t change my title and/or description, can’t view my note history, and my name isn’t showing up on who’s joined OD lately, even though others are. Please fix it ASAP. If you need my paypal confirmation number thing, I’ll gladly give that to you. Thanks.

i still cant cut and paste text from word to my entries.

Sorry to bug you. I was just wondering how come, when I use my HTML, even the simplest things like bold and italics, why do I have to go into edit for them to pop up as what they should look like? It doesn’t do that with notes, they actually show up like they should, but in my entries, I can’t do it that way. I always have to hit edit this entry before it shows up.

Sorry to bug you.. but everytime I log in, I am taking to the OD’s default page like usual, but there aren’t any links to click on. (i.e. My Diary, Read Diaries, etc.) I hope this gets fixed soon =/ Megz

This site sucks….seriously. There are so many problems it’s ridiculous. It seems every day something is screwed up.

I am not using the freeopendiary url or the odplus url and I’m still getting logged out when I click on certain links..

Why don’t you learn how to use mod_rewrite or something already? This has been going on ever since you moved opendiaryplus to opendiary.

so,this means that even freeopendiary users can login through the opendiary website besides the opendiary users? pls reply.thx.

This note is about accessing the help page.Everytime I click on it I get the front page. I’m thinking there is no help page. What I want to know is ‘Can I make some of my entries private and some public? I have the free subscription. Thanks, Meowll

i have a question. i used to be able to log in, go to other webpages and then come back to check for notes and still be logged in. since the merge, when i leave the site i am logged out when i return to the site and need to log in again. is this just me? if so, how can i stop this from happening. awilson-kenney@cogeco.ca is my email if its easier for you to answer there. thank you so much!

why don’t you use mod_rewrite and direct all freeopendiary.com and opendiaryplus.com requests to opendiary.com
