Big Ideas & Opinions on Ai-Written Novels
We have to have a book published before Tuesday. Did I mention I hate deadlines?? My 2 week vacation starts on Friday, and so many things have to get wrapped up before then. What do I have planned for my 2 week vacation?? Building my new business! It will be an amazing business to help authors. That’s all I can say at this point. I just feel that authors deserve the same playing field that authors had back in the early 1900s, before there were big monopolies and narrow gates for struggling authors to get through. Nowadays, for authors to get published by a big publisher, they need to have huge social media followings, and basically be some kind of celebrity. Most real authors are introverts, not people that like to be in front of a camera. Writers are generally busy writing, not working on building a social media following. Even the best authors have a struggle to find an agent to get them published. It is NOT an easy road for today’s authors, the ones that don’t have millions of followers already. I want to change that. I want to have an independent way to generate money to fund the publishing of authors books, whether they have a following or not. I don’t believe authors should have to pay to be published. I want publishing to be the way it used to be. Before the monopolies. Before having an agent was necessary to be published. I want to be able to give authors at least small advances in the future, even if they don’t have a following. In order to do that, it is going to take some time to raise funds for that. But, I have a plan in place. This is what I’m working on. I will be launching phase 1 in January, which will be building up funding. If the funding comes quickly, then I can begin publishing authors sooner. My business is going to be a publishing business that functions in the way the successful ones used to.
Regardless of this digital age. What is old is new again. Old ways are new in a new generation. This is the new generation. It is time for publishing to be done in the old ways. This is my goal and I have a solid plan. No, this does not mean we will be publishing just any book. Just like the olden days, books are required to be well written, original, engaging, and unique. No books can be written by ai. This is just for so many reasons, not the least being that ai material cannot be copyrighted.
I would say, “don’t get me started on novels written by ai!” Alas, it is too late for that! I’ve already gotten started now. The problem with novels written entirely by ai, or even portions of it, is that the writers that resort to this, don’t know that the ai writing is bad. The rule of thumb should be: if you think ChatGPT is a better writer than you, then you are not ready to be published. Ai can generate what appears to be good writing, but it is not cohesive, original, or interesting. It glazes over areas where humans need emotional connection to the story. Ai is unable to give that. Another rule of thumb is: if you can get ai to generate a novel for you to write, any other person can use ai to generate a novel a novel to read. They don’t need to pay for your book. They can freely get a poorly-written novel to entertain them.
From a business perspective, bookstores won’t carry ai written books. Distributors hate them. Editors hate them. As a business, no one wants to deal with an ai-written book. Think about it; if they did, publishers would just have ai generate a ton of books and publish them without ever needing to pay a dime to any author!
For authors that think publishers can’t tell a book was written by ai–yes, we can! There are tools novels are run through to check for plagiarism and ai generation. If there is even a hint that your book is possibly generated by ai, a publisher won’t accept it. Why? Because it’s just a nightmare we don’t want to unravel. In any busy industry, you don’t want to have to waste time–especially if you’re underpaid–dealing with a nightmare issue when it is so easy to just say “next!” and move on to the next manuscript that may be an original, excellently written, joyful read that passes through the ringer with no plagiarism or ai flags.
So, for authors that are truly desiring to be published by a traditional publisher, take the time to learn how to tell a story well. There are books out there. Keep reading. Keep writing. The more you read, the better you write.
