They say it sounds like a freight train…

when a tornado approaches.

Well, you all know I’m at home with just the kids and I. We’ve been under severe storm warnings and flood warnings all night and earlier we were put under a Tornado warning… The towns affected didn’t include us, it seemed like we were probably -just- a tiny bit too far south. Because of that, I wasn’t about to wake up the kids. I did the next best thing and opened the basement door (the older kids’ room is in the basement anyway) and opened the baby’s door so that I could get her and get downstairs if it started getting nasty outside or if the sirens went off or anything…

Then I decided to go outside and look.  I kind of like storms. I always have. I walked outside and peered up at the sky over the cornfield across the street. The clouds were grey and ugly. There was a lot of lightning and it was raining fairly hard, but all in all, I saw nothing ot be overly worried about… and then I heard it.

It started out quiet, like a low rumble of thunder…. but it got louder… and closer. I had a brief moment of panic where I thought "It sounds like a freight train!" I probably would have turned to run in the house, but I didn’t have time.

As soon as the thought crossed my mind and I knew I was screwed and needed to get the baby into the basement as quickly as possible, it was already too late. I only had a split second to panic before…

I heard the train whistle.

*sigh* I guess it never occurred to me that I live only a couple blocks from the tracks. I’m so stupid sometimes.
