2023 Week 0 – College Football Returns

Today would mark the beginning of the USC Trojans football season, 2023 edition, as we host the San Jose State Spartans at United Airlines Field at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum at 5pm.  I had forgotten how the name of our home field has gotten considerably longer through the years.  I suppose many of us still refer to our home field simply as “The Coliseum”.  Either way, the name of the stadium doesn’t matter.  The Spartans will return to San Jose losers after today’s game, regardless of the name of the stadium.  I don’t want to go and predict a final score or anything, but I am confident that the Spartans won’t score more than USC today.  For as long as I can remember, I don’t think there’s ever really been an especially competitive game between SJSU and USC.  SJSU just can’t compete with USC and that’s the way it has always been.  This will be the first of many USC wins this season and all of that starts today.

Caleb Williams is looking to repeat his Heisman campaign of 2022 and put up ungodly numbers again.  I have faith that the Trojans will be competitive this season, though I’d really like to see a victory against Utah.  Utah gave us two of our three losses last year and I know that Williams and Co. have to be out for revenge, come October 21 when the Utes travel to The Coliseum.  In looking at the schedule, I also see that we will meet up with the Oregon Ducks this season.  That game is scheduled for 11/11 and will take us to Autzen Stadium in Oregon.  I don’t know what the Ducks are doing, but they’ve played us pretty close in the past.  I don’t think this will be one of those games that we can overlook on the schedule, though I will say that the following week on 11/18, we host those damn UCLA Bruins.  I’m biased, but I don’t see UCLA doing anything to us this year, so suffice it to say that the Victory Bell will remain adorned in the Cardinal & Gold.  But I’d be getting ahead of myself, being that the season is just getting started today.  First thing’s first though.  Let’s smack around the Spartans today.  We’ll worry about the Bruins in just under three months.

College football has returned.

All I have to say is, “Fight on!”
