After going through the entire term not really sure of the moral view of my Intro to Moral Philosophy prof, I finally have an indication!

She just mentioned in class that out of all the theories she finds Nihilism particularly compelling, though she wishes it weren’t. This doesn’t mean she’s a nihlist, but definitely that she is sympathetic to its arguments. This is a huge relief – at the beginning of the term I thought she was some sort of Kantian. Phew. =)

What is Nihilism you ask?
It is the moral belief that:
1. There are no moral facts.
2. There are no moral truths.

So ie. “Torturing kittens is wrong” is not objectively true. The morality that most people subscribe to is only a social construct, a false set of rules based on moral values which don’t actually exist.

Neat huh? Heh. I’m somewhat leaning towards nihilism myself, though my last trip back to Singapore, and my conversation with Sok Ching convinced me of the merits of skepticism (though it is not something she was arguing for).

Anyway, will post a copy of my moral phil paper later – it got an A and it’s about relativism! Very interesting stuff! (For me anyway)

Back to class!

Heh it has been 3 years since we talked about nihilism, and your stand hasn’t changed (mine has, though..). But true, stuff on relativism and morality are really interesting. stan.
