japan dreams of monsters
unleashes by the magical bomb
that wiped out two of her cities
and first these monsters destroy
first these monsters take tokyo too
but it doesn’t last that way
it doesn’t last that way for long

pretty soon japan dreams
of the monsters as rather their monsters
as monsters that protect them from bigger monsters
worse monsters
monsters from far far away
at least these monsters are japanese
and so they become heroes
in their national dreams

this is how things work
we fear and then we sublimate
and then the things we feared once
become the friends to children everywhere
they become our bosom allies
against the next preposturous thing
again and again and again

gamera was destroyer of worlds
now he’s really neat
godzilla smashed whole cities
now we hang out with godzooky
and godzilla guards the high seas
as we have our wacky adventures

never mind the girls in sailor suits
tormented by horrifying squid things
until it no longer was a horror
and instead became a fetish

japan dreams of monsters
and so do we
but i would rather
dream of better things
