Musing about Diane and her sister
My wife had an identical twin sister, Brenda. I think I wrote about her suicide years ago. I met both of them on the same evening at their sorority. Naturally the two of them look very much alike. The main difference is that Diane had a facial hemangioma next to her left eye at birth. The tumor grew to the point where her eye was damaged and she required radiation to shrink it. It left her scarred and with only shadows visible in that eye. In junior high she had surgery to help repair the damage. You can imagine the effect this had on her in school and how cruel kids can be.
The thing I want to mention is that I could see past the scarring and realize how beautiful my wife was because I was able to see her twin sister (who was drop-dead gorgeous). I hope this doesn’t sound weird like some incestuous story. The impact this tough life had on Diane is that she is an unbelievably good person inside because of it. She doesn’t play mind games. She is totally honest -would never think to tell a lie. She would never cheat on me in any fashion. She would sometimes say some corny line but it always came straight from her heart.
At the time I met them I was 21 and, in hindsight, a bit immature. But I was mature enough to recognize the gem that Diane was. And I married her!
