Brief Life Summary

Life accomplishments – possible material for obituary. I started writing this in the third person for that reason.

Born in Montpelier Vermont. Attended Montpelier High School where he participated in Football, Track, Student Council, Latin Club and Varsity Club. He was voted captain of the JV football team and co-captain of the track and field team. During his senior year he was voted Governor of school during mock democracy week. During his junior year he was suspended for streaking through the school during that craze.

Attended the University of Vermont where he received a BS in Mechanical Engineering and founded the UVM Ultimate Frisbee Club.

He married Diane one year out of college in 1980 and they enjoyed all of their remaining years together. 42 years and counting.

He worked for 35 years for Union Carbide/Energizer. He started in St. Albans, Vt as an engineer for 6 years then managed the maintenance department for one year.

Next he transferred to Greenville, NC to manage the maintenance department there. While there his son, Justin Morgan was born. He stayed there until the plant was closed.

Next he transferred to Red Oak, Iowa as head of engineering. He remained there for 7 years until that plant was also closed.

The next assignment was as head of engineering and assistant plant manager at the Bennington, Vt. plant for 3 years.

Next he relocated to manufacturing headquarters in Westlake, Ohio for 11 years where he headed up global maintenance operations. During this time he traveled to all of the battery plants around the world  including China, Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Switzerland, Czech Republic, France, Egypt and Kenya.  He also traveled extensively to the US battery plants.

In 2010 Ernie went back to St. Albans, Vermont due to some health concerns with his wife, Diane and also to be near their parents in their last years of life.  He worked there for the last 3 years of his career. He worked as the head of all technical services and then as acting assistant plant manager. He headed up the closure of the plant including liquidation of all the building contents and putting the building up for sale.

After retirement Ernie worked with his brother, Gerry, to start a maple syrup and woodlot management LLC. The purchased a sawmill, cut down the trees and built a picturesque sugar house on the family property. They tapped 2500 trees each year. This became his chief retirement hobby. The modest income from it was used to help pay taxes and maintain the property.

Ernie also spent 4 years building a timber framed cabin in the woods. All of the wood was cut from the land, milled on site and hand chiseled to fit.

I’m only 65 and still in good health. The story isn’t over yet. Not sure what else I’ll have time for but hopefully something noteworthy.

Namaste

I sure wish my relatives and late spouse had thought of doing this!

@agamemnon

Planning ahead and organizing is in my nature. Sometimes I wonder if it causes me to spend too much time in the future and not enough in the present.  Perhaps an entry topic.
