Thirsty
Two days ago, Boo & I went to the Library. We’ve started to read "The Lightning Thief", inspired partly by the movie trailers…partly by a friend who just read it with her 8 yr old son…and partly because she LOVES Greek Mythology. The book is lots of fun, in our opinion, and so I wanted to refresh our memories on the Olympians. Not just refresh, but learn things we probably didn’t know yet – and this seemed a good time to do it – I don’t think it’ll be a problem to do both things concurrently. That is, read TLT for pleasure and the others for reference. Boo wanted to pose with each book she got from the Library, so here’s what we’ve got:
EXCELLENT book so far.
This one, I’m going to read first – I like the idea of Iris the messenger, and if it’s not too involved, we’ll read it between books 1 & 2 of PJ & TO.
THIS one? Way Cool – it’s a Graphic Novel. 🙂
Can’t wait to get into this one, anything by Usborne is wonderful.
Boo loves the thought of speaking to animals and communicating with plants, so she is very fond of Demeter…this one looks good.
What’s not to like about a Winged Horse, really?
Boo’s! Current! Favorite!
EXCELLENT illustrations, and concise descriptions.
This one looks like a good reference, too – and also has great pictures.
We love the library, but it’s dangerous – I always, ALWAYS forget to return the books on time. !!
What a great assortment! Enjoy them. I love the public library.

For some reason the cover of Greece! Rome! Monsters! makes me feel all happy inside. I think it’s the fun and vibrant use of purple. *huge grin* Can you re-check the books online? Our library will let us do that as long as no one’s waiting for whatever we have out. It saves us a lot of those troubling ‘Oh crap, those books were due yesterday and I’m not going back into town until later in the week!’ moments… it’s much better to pay ONE day’s late charge than five, especially for people like us who check out several books at a time! *hehehe* 🙂 ~Shady

I LOVED D’Aulaire’s when I was little! My best friend and I used to read the stories all the time and act them out. Have fun! Love,

Mattie has read that series twice already…and Tim and I have read it too. It’s a GREAT series, especially if Boo is already interested in Greek mythology. The Story of the World curriculum has a great section on Greece if you can get a hold of it. Lots of projects, some coloring pages, and historical stuff too. 🙂 We are in the middle of it right now.

ryn: While insectlore.com has a TON of great stuff (and fantastic information, too!), it is cheaper to get the praying mantis egg case at the local garden center. Unless that’s just a California-local sort of thing, and Home Depot doesn’t carry them country-wide. If you do go with insectlore, (I think the egg case is about $7) I would (speaking from experience) steer clear of the “Praying MantisPagoda” that they try to upsell you. It’s just a small screen-cage, and is way less cool than just suspending the egg case among the plants in a cheap-o home-built terrarium in a (probably you can find it for free) cracked fish tank.

The d’Aulaire’s book is one of my all-time favorite books, EVER. It introduced me to Greek mythology, and when I loaned it to my first grade teacher, it introduced the rest of my class to Greek mythology too. I also had the Macmillan book. SUCH GREAT STUFF!!!

I love libraries, and probably should use them more.. but I tend to spend a fortune at the used bookstores or Barnes and Noble instead! thats fantastic that she loves reading and learning!

Libraries ROCK! I’ve got to start writing letters because they’re slashing state funding down here.

Peanut loves Greek myths too. Have you ever watched the Henson movies- oh can’t think of the name of the series now. I’m going to have to go google & come back with the name….

I’m just finishing up Lightning Thief myself and was impressed how good it really is.

ryn: The shutter button is on the top, and the camera’s screwed into the tripod on the bottom. There’s no problem. I suppose if you were using longer exposures, you’d want to eliminate camera shake with a remote trigger, but the bee photos are such quick shots, there’s no shake. The tripod is primarily to maintain a strict focal field, as I tend to sway when I stand still.
