the lies we tell

My husband chose to stop eating shellfish and pork several years ago. He said he wanted to follow some of the Jewish laws concerning food. I don’t care as long as you don’t drag me into it. He tries to tell people about what foods he “can’t” eat, but with many of his Christian friends, the explanation gets muddy. I won’t get into it, because I don’t care. His choice, his problem. Anyway, today I overheard his phone conversation with someone and he was telling this individual that he used to take lessons from a rabbi about the Torah (true) and that the rabbi instructed him that he would need to adhere to some food guidelines while taking classes (not true). What a blatant lie that was. I don’t know whether I should tell him I overheard his conversation and ask about that lie or just ignore it. But if I hear it again, I definitely will say something. There’s just no need to lie about something so stupid as dietary choices. It’s nobody’s business why you choose to eat or not eat certain foods. I’ve told him that, but he just feels compelled to try to explain his choices. Honestly, he just wanted to be Jewish without the actual conversion. It’s like living with a child.
