Nap time
Oh boy… we have had some full days. Rosie had quite a bit of stress yesterday. God, the stove really makes her bonkers. I boiled some black beans and had to take her outside for the 10 minutes they were on the stove. I put them in the crockpot to cook the rest of the way so she wouldn’t be stressed. She only got one walk yesterday and I found out she LOVES squirrels. She nearly pulled me into the street to try to chase one. I think yesterday was a bit much for her. I tried to many new things with her. Amos was gone with Mich for a vet apt and while they were out, I thought I would do the 10 min TV watching activity and then also lay some toys out to see if she would like to try any. Both activities really upset her.
Once Mich and Amos got home things calmed down a bit and I finally got the follow-up call from the rescue. So, I was able to ask some questions and get some advice. It was good to have that talk because it has helped me chill out a bit. I really worried that she was bored because Amos doesn’t want to play and she doesn’t know what toys are and she can’t really take more than a 5 minute walk. The lady said that given her age and the conditions she’s come from, she’s probably perfectly happy to just be hanging out in a warm house with a peaceful environment and to not have any expectations placed on her.
So, today I have been totally chilled out with her. I also found the rescue’s schedule for the dogs and a list of activities and dos and don’ts. So, this has really helped give me an idea of what to do with her. Their schedule include a nice 3 hour nap period in the middle of the day! So, that’s what they are doing now. She regressed a little bit more… this morning she was afraid of the leash. She went flat when I put it on her. I backed up and let the leash go slack and she calmed down enough to go outside. She also lays down once outside for a while until we can get her walking around. Then she calms down a bit.
She’s doing this new goofy thing… She somehow manages to pull the food bowls out of their cradles and managed to tip water all over the floor. Mich said when she got home yesterday the floor was all wet. The cradles were standing up but the metal bowls were on the floor… Today, during my shower, she knocked hers over and spilled the water. Its goofy… but we know to put the water on the counter when we are gone LOL
The only new incident with Amos was in the yard before I got home. Mich said that when they were outside, Amos freaked because a dog walked by in the alley and he got all worked up like he does… He was racing back and forth and barking his head off… Rosie FINALLY barked!!! I missed it!! But she started barking and Amos got mad and kinda went after her… but that is typical. He used to fight with Buster when they both barked at the gate. Anyway, Mich said she separated them and then things were back to normal again.
We are progressing at a snails pace, but that is ok. From what we’ve read and been told, it may be months before Rosie is a normal dog. We are very very happy to have her in our family.
what you are saying about no expectations and just being chill is what my friend diane was told, she’s had her girl for about 2 yrs now.

We had a dog that never, ever barked… until he went blind and fairly deaf. He’d bark at the door to come in because he couldn’t see if we saw him or not. Animals amaze me every day, even when I just stop to watch the pigeons on the sidewalk 🙂 Yaaaaay, rescue pets!

Have you thought about putting the leash on her and leaving it on her in the house? I’ve also heard of people attaching the leash to them so the dog is always following them.. but not sure you need that.. but maybe just getting her used to the leash in a non threatening environment and doing little practice walks in the house and giving her tons of positive reinforcement during those small times(and stopping way before she feels tired or stressed) might help her?
