No More Propane?

If  everything works like I think it will, we have used the last propane ever in our home!

Today the contractors are finishing the install of two heat-pump hot water heaters.  One will be used for domestic and the other will heat the bathroom floors. Last week they installed heat pump/air conditioners in the great room and the master bedroom.

The hot water heaters are quite interesting. They are located in the basement and they take heat (and humidity!) out of the air and use it to heat the hot water. Since the basement never gets below 58 degrees, this should work fine even in the winter.  We’ll see. So far I’m impressed with how quiet they are. It seems to be about the same as a dehumidifier.

The units that heat and cool the air in the house are also very effective and quiet. I’ll use them to cool on the hot and humid days in the summer and also to heat during the shoulder season. My wood stove will do the primary heating in the winter.

I suppose that I might need the propane heater for times when we are on vacation away from the house during the winter but we’ll see.  The heat pumps are supposed to be sized to heat down to -5 F degrees.

Next month I’ll be having the solar panels put in to offset the electricity that these units use.

Feels good!

What a relief to achieve this level of self sufficiency.
