Speech, House, and Reunion
I’ve been grooming my best man speech for Saturday. I’m trying to keep it short, but effective. I think I have a good thing with most of the written speech, but I do not like the end. It doesn’t seem appropriate…
"I’m Justin, and I’d like to thank BGem and BSco for letting me be a part of the wedding party, and thank them for letting all of us enjoy this day with them.
I’ve been friends with BGem since 1995. That’s 17 years. Those years started with Map Making, Lego cities in the Dog run, planning tunnels among other things. We moved on from that to things that really define friendship. We’ve always been able to communicate and compromise well to make things work for both of us. I’ve had many intellectual conversations with BGem. The most admirable thing about him is reliability; whenever I needed a friend growing up then also helped to support both Twin and I as we started building our life together.
Once Twin and I met BSco, I knew there was no better match for BGem than BSco. The adjectives I would use to describe BGem’s personality I think would also describe BSco’s. BGem was never more smitten with someone, and hasn’t been happier. I hope to be around for a long time to watch them build a wonderful life together.
So, cheers to the BGem and BSco whose happiest memories start with today."
… the problem I have, and was trying to avoid throughout was placing words that dictate judgment. I’m sure they’ve had many happy days, but I don’t want to say the happiest are ahead (though they surely are). If its not that, "starting with today" is me struggling to bring the wedding into the context of their life together thus far.

With the house, it sounds like we will be signing documents at the end of the week. We want to get the keys to our contractor right away, so we will probably forego camping this weekend to make sure that can happen. Started looking up information for combatting bindweek, which seems to be a species of Morning Glory. We also have some berry bushes to deal with. Lastly, there’s a mess of mulch and yard waste in some areas of the backyard that will be organized. Since we have a fireplace, we will probably save that for warming the house or summertime bon fires.

Twins’ reunion went really well. There wasn’t many people there, but there were enough she hadn’t seen for awhile or had forgotten about to be thankful to go. There was some conversation that Twin prompted generational theory into. Then there was a hypnotist… and it seemed to work on Twin (who had 4 drinks up to that point). That was interesting; I figured it was a farce but she had a hard time consciously remembering things she did. Out of 8, she was the best at belly dancing, imitating Beyonce, and doing body-builder poses.
I’ve been the maid of honor twice now over the past year, once for my sister and again for my friend in Phoenix. I don’t remember how I ended it for my friend but I found my toast entry for my sister. My last line was “I love you both and I wish you all the luck and love life has to offer in the years to come.” I like the rest of your toast, it’s very thoughtful 🙂

I’d be interesting in hearing Twin’s take on the hypnotism experience. The only change I’d make on your speech was when you said, “He’s never been more smitten with someone” – I would eliminate “with someone” because my biggest pet peeve is when there’s a mention of past relationships. Even the generic ‘with someone’ would still elicit thoughts of him being smitten with other people. Leaving it out won’t negatively affect the sentence.

Looks like a good speech. *smiles* I hope the wedding is fantastic! Keeping my fingers crossed that everything works out with the house. Glad Twins’ reunion went really well. 🙂

Good luck with the speech. I was maid of honor at my twin sisters wedding and I was a train wreck, way too emotional and long winded. I sorta regret it. I should have stuck to what I had written! She on the other other hand made a great speech at my wedding. Good luck with the house…Im sure you guys are getting excited.

I think your speech is perfect and am certain they will love it.

RYN: I just get nervous with the cat in there, this is our older sorta skiddish cat and Id be scared he’d never want to come out. Good point about mice though. Never thought of that. RYN2: Haha sometimes its my intention to take it further but once one of us gets going on something that usually really doees the job you get greedy and dont want to stop. At least thats sorta how it is for us.

ryn: Inspectors are coming on Monday 😀 We would do it anyway, but since the house was built in 1927 it would be good to see where potential problem areas might be. AND SECRET HIDDEN ROOMS! No I don’t know if there are any but…there’s always a possibility right?
