Voice

I’m going to shed light on a bit of something, briefly that has always been a problem for me.

Voice. The way I write here is no where near how I actually talk. My writing tries to be precise, grammatically correct with few punctuations and contractions. I really hate the word, "got." It sounds so… absurd. I got hitch. I got hot. I got food. I rather say I was married. I was getting hot. I had to buy some food. I also don’t use profanity all that often, usually just when I’m driving. A person just sounds so uneducated when they passively use profane words as adjectives.

I’m getting off topic.

When I speak, its not precise. I may run words together, studder, repeat words like "yeah, yeah" or "I… I think," or not know what to say and stare blankly. I’m also not standing on a soapbox metaphorically when I speak. I say something short and look forward to the response. I’m actually a pretty upbeat, lighthearted conversationalist – hence why I start conversations with weather. After that, we find something else to talk about.

I don’t waste time in talking about something that person I know did, I talk about what I like. I’m not sure how other people view things, or if I should be repeating things they’ve told me – so I just talk about me and things I’ve been apart of. You get to know me, and not my friends. I will let you make your own judgments about my friends (and hence why I’m open).

So, I ask please to not take me as this uptight, straight as an arrow type person. I write to exercise logic, and logic can be… dull. Logic doesn’t have a voice because it shouldn’t emotion. It shouldn’t have emotion so it can maintain objectivity. A person who can be objective appears to be logical…

I have thought about posting a video. I’m sure some would be surprised by the pitches or tones of my voice, and the expressiveness of my facial features. With the way I write, you may think I sound like Ben Stein.

Have a great weekend everyone!

I’m always curious about how people I read on here talk and stuff, so you should post a video!

I use to love video blogging…haven’t done it in a while though. It really can be a lot of fun, both for you and your readers… I think you should give it a go, at least once! It would be a treat for all of us. 🙂 I have to quote my mentor Dr. Herron and say, “Sometimes f*ck is exactly the word you need.” I have no issue with profanity. Use to…I use to NEVER cuss…but that seems likeages ago now. I write here pretty much exactly like I talk…which is something I have to look out for both when I am writing academically (because that of course requires me to be far more polished and precise with my words) and when I story write (because I need to be sure the characters each speak in their own voices, not all like me).

Ben Stein. Heh. I swear a LOT. A LOT. Everyone I work with swears a lot. I think I’m just used to it. It doesn’t bother me. There’s definitely a time and place, but in general, swearing. Every time I do something sub-par in softball, I drop the F Bomb and it’s not quiet. Weather is my least favorite topic with strangers. Every time I go to the bank for work, we talk about the weather. It just seems so… obvious. post a video! I would, but I don’t know how.

I would love to see a video post! That’s one of the problems with the written word, there is no tone of voice or body language to go with it. I get you are expressing a logical point of view, but often times since you don’t seem to attempt to put emotion into the words you are using it makes you sound…bored. No emotion is ok, but why write about what you don’t appear to care about?

Hahaha… I liked this. I would have to say that some of this is true for my writing. I tend to usually write what is going through my head and how it is going through my head. In life… well, sometimes I can be that way, but when it counts, at work or formal functions, I can get it together. In my job, I am directly under our Dept Dir, along with 1 other person. but I try not to take myself

or life too seriously. Also, I am a contract manager here, with staff. I have to be able to write memos, letters, contracts, etc… I just choose to be more free and open to puncuation and grammatical mistakes in my diary. That’s the joy of this place, I think! Thanks for sharing that about yourself!

RYN: Oh yeah, as for my mother, she feels she is ENTITLED to know everything about us. So not true.
