Homage.

i just saw america
and realized you were the best part.
so i’ll stop by on my way around from now on just to look at the place we stood.
it will probably break my heart the first time it snows,
but maybe we’ll be inside a bar, celebrating getting this far.

when we get out to the car i’ll ask you if i was ever any good.
was i ever any good?
how did we lose the friends we lost and can we come back here again next year?

i guess it’s more than a little sad to know that we had something no one had.
and as time on like it does, i know it like i know my lover’s face.
it’s blood, a handshake, some dumb treehouse promise
that our teenage bodies won’t let us break.
that our grown up lives still fit in
just to shoot the shit and check out the footprints in the mud.

’cause now i have seen america.
and i am gunna see even more.
but i’ll stop by on my way around.
we’re the only witnesses we’ll ever have.

Wistful and poignant, like the memories of old friends.
