another year older, a new one’s just begun

hey there boys, girls, and those with a little of both. i know, i know, i’ve fallen off the face of the earth, but im back for a bit.

so, today is the last day of 2006. i know today is the day where we are dead set that we’ll hold fast to our resolutions, the night some of us get shit faced and just try not to pass out too soon (hope none of you are dumb enough to drive home).

i dont like all that looking forward crap.

how many of us have actually stuck to our resolutions for more than a month? a week? how many of us change our resolutions "well, it’ll be alright just this once" "so i’ll only do it once a week" "it’s a holiday, i can give in for one day"

if you think you have the convictions to go through with your plan, then i hope the gods give you the guts to do it. I, on the other hand, have no such willpower, and as such, dont do the new years resolution thing.

i prefer to reflect on the past year. normally im preaching about looking forward, putting the past behind us, blah blah blah, but today i think is the one day if the year where we SHOULD go back and see what happened. it’s a time to face the devils we’ve conjured since last january, and stare them down so we can start clean again tomorrow.

today is a day to look at our mistakes, our triumphs, our idiot moments, and see what worked out and what didnt. it’s the biggest day of learning life lessons all year. only now can you look back at what happened over the sumer and say "well, that was a bad call". only now can you learn from that and see the consecuences of the actions we take. that’s what i do instead of a new years resolution: i strengthen my self awareness, and i mentally kick myself for every time i made an ass out of myself. i think it works pretty well.

i think that’s why so much emphesis is put on the turning of the new year. it’s a subconscious need for us to make a definate clean start in our lives. when the clock hits zero, we’re new people, clean from our previous vices, desires, free from last year’s shame and stupidity. and it’s a great thing too.

tonight we watch the twilight of what we’ve known for so long fade away. tomorrow is the day when we look to the new dawn of our lives.

well, that’s all i have to say.
it’s been a fun year
lets hope we all see many, many more.

i agree once more. but i guess, your always still that person, nick, but its just a new.. chapter in your life. the past is still always there, and sometimes people won’t let you live it down (usually bastards.) The pages in your book are already filled, and it looks like the book is done, and then, BOOM, new year, another chapter. it was fun last night. Take care have a good new year <3 amanda

p.s. once you left i delivered a good one to dustin’s sternum (i have horrible aim… i didnt even know where i was actually aiming for.) He was out of breath, and the thing he said when he regained enough breath to speak, “Well, you did as nick said, you put your whole body into it.” 😛 loves and care, every way.. and every where okay, cutting the mushy rhyming crap. later <3 amanda

I stumbled across your diary and found it interesting. I’d have to say that I look at New Years, as a time to Reflect on the years past and look forward to a brand new year, being able to start anew putting the years past, where they belong, in the past and wondering what I’ll be doing/thinking next year at this time. I just wishone could truly put the past year away and not have things cross over

ryn: omg lol sorry, i should have mentioned that i spent most of my life in kenosha.. i grew up there and was raised there. i just dont want to go cuz of my family.. but i loooove it all toghter.. and i do admit its alot better than south carolina.. lol

RYN: Actually, in New Orleans and some parts of Mississippi Whites ARE the minority. For the construction of the Superdome it was written in the contract that only minority labor would be used. This clause was edited out when the construction company began hiring white people. It was replaced with ‘minority considered on a national level.’

RYN: If he was making a reference to Dante there are a few things wrong. However, the thought did cross my mind. It is a common mis-conception today that Hell is hot, Dante actually wrote that it was colder the father one got, the devil for instance was frozen from the waist down. Even if Hell has various degrees, the question remains what is ethically more important for mankind to protect?

I think God is more of a Alaskan Huskie type. I agree that the needless killing or mistreatment of any life is against God’s law. We are stewards of the earth, we are responsible for it’s welfare and safe keeping. This extends from resource management through forest protection right on to wildlife and human care. While they are all important, there is a hierarchy of value involved.

There is a book by John Haught called ‘Science and Religion.’ It is a somewhat philosophical book, but you or your uncle should be able to get through it. We used the book in our Natural Theology class at the undergraduate seminary I just graduated from. Feel free to tell him it was required for us to read at seminary, it is a good book and explains how the two paths (science and religion)

Answer two completely difference questions and how what appears to be a contradiction is merely a person over stepping his boundaries and speaking out of turn and in a realm which he is not either familiar with or otherwise should not be making assertions. Also, if you need further canon fodder (pun intended) check the Catechism, I am pretty sure it is covered in there that a Theistic

(note the space there) theory of evolution where God is THE active agent in creation not only of the world but the species (essentially the force which ‘naturally selects’) is okay to hold. Let me know if you need some backup on the issue.

Nick, while what you say is partly true, I believe that if I entrust my soul to the collective thinking of a large group who see the vast majority of the world, religion, ethics/morality, etc the same as I do, then I believe I will be less likely to stray and slip into a relativism and begin accepting whatever just makes me happy, just my two cents.

Because God is not what I want him to be. God is not my ‘personal’ God. He is the God of humanity, the world, the universe. It is more than just me. Also, if I remove myself from all things spiritually objective then where is my moral grounding? Where is my compass for interpreting scripture? I think we both will agree that people can get some pretty wide ranging interpretations from scripture.
