Young Man

Such a young father.
But he carries a beaming smile
with a child he totes like a trophy.
Though, his eyes wish the dark circles
were from parties missed and not
hard-learned parenting lessons for the
inexperienced.

I admire his diligence.

He catches me staring and we
exchange mutual envious glances:
mine for his smile on fatherhood;
his for my childlessness,
a foresight to wear a condom…

My boyfriend has gone through exactly what you wrote, when we had our daughter. Very beatuifully written and honest yet not harsh and blunt.

Do you write from experience as a young father yourself? You’re very well spoken.
