Ridiculously Impressed

Being the crazy knitter that I am, I will offer to anybody the opportunity to learn how to knit. In fact, I encourage it with most people that I meet who offer evn the slightest bit of interest in my stitchwork. Even if they don’t really want to learn how to knit, I still offer. Constantly. Because I need more friends that knit.

Last week, I taught Michelle how to knit. I showed her how to cast on once. I showed her the knit stitch once. I corrected her on her form and her stitches once. I saw her two days later and she had gotten the hang of the knit stitch, for the most part. Had taught herself how to bind off. Cast on a new project and made a perfect square with only one or two YOs in it and had bound that off.

In the week that it has been since I taught her the knit stitch, she has taught herself how to bind off, the purl stitch, and how to cable. And has several inches of a cabled stitch pattern knit up.

I am ridiculously impressed with her. I have never seen someone pick something up so freaking fast. And I look back at my own knitting journey and being perfectly content for the better part of year just working with a knit stitch. Garter stitch scarves for everybody guys! Hats? No. Scarves. That’s where it is AT. Ribbing? Um. There is nothing wrong with garter stitch. GARTER STITCH 4 LIFE!!!11!!!!1

After I learned how to purl (and that was a difficult task in and of itself) the floodgates opened and I found myself in the exciting new world of roll brim hats. And eventually, socks. Turning a heel was the longest and most confusing project I have ever given myself. But I figured it out. I’m pro now.

Michelle has blown me away with her own knitting journey. She wants me to teach her how to make socks next week. I told her to make a hat first. I feel like we’re going to be making a lot of trips to buy yarn. And other supplies.

In other news: I learned how to crochet this week! I was teaching some old ladies how to knit (Like I said… anyone who expresses even the slightest bit of interest…) and it turned into an exchange of craft techniques. And crocheting isn’t as difficult as I originally thought it was. And learning it (it was super easy) will only augment my knitting in the best possible ways. Now I can do crochet borders on stuff and make people think I’m really crafty!

Time for work!

Les Mis tonight (finally!)
