A Little Pink Line
Tonight I decided to write after several days of ignoring the lonesome pining noises my computer was emitting from the library. I perused my bookmarks, caught up on my friend’s entries, and further ignored starting an entry of my own.
From an atheist website, I noticed Richard Dawkins has started to air a new mini-series on Channel 4, Sex, Death, and the Meaning of Life. You can watch the first and second episodes on YouTube. I ran off to my office to download the first episode so I could stream it to the TV.
I bumped into Meg in hallway on my way back to the library. “Hey, come look at this,” she said. “I think I see a line.”
I followed her into the brightly lit bathroom, where Meg produced a pregnancy test, one of the cheap ones we bought from the dollar store last month.
I peered at the test. The control line was there. The rest of the strip was white down the stick to the handle. And yet… A grey line? A faint line? I angled the test into the light, away from the light, searching for a positive sign. Please be there, I wished silently.
“I think maybe I see something,” I said at last, reaching a tentative conclusion.
“I’m going to take another one,” Meg said. She produced a Dixie cup of urine from the bathroom. Either she hadn’t flushed it from before, or she’s faster in there than I recall. Another pregnancy test was dunked and then laid on the counter. This time it was an expensive one, a First Response, which has a better reputation of early detection than the bargain one.
A wait lasting approximately an eternity ensued.
I hovered over it, keeping my head tilted enough so I didn’t obscure the display with my shadow. At last a first pink line showed up. I pointed out my discovery.
“That’s the control,” Meg said. She leaned in closer with me and we stared at the little plastic viewing window.
A little pink line started to appear exactly where I wanted it.
“That’s a line,” Meg said.
“That’s definitely a pink line,” I agreed.
I held the test aloft in the light, watching the line become stronger. “That’s a line,” I repeated.
Meg sat down on the edge of the bathtub. “We’re pregnant!” she squealed. Her face glowed in excitement.
I hugged her. “We’re pregnant!”
We embraced and kissed jubilantly.
I retrieved a pocket flashlight and shone it at the line. “Oh yeah, that’s definitely a line.”
We kissed some more. Meg went off to post her discovery on a pregnancy forum, while I floated around the room.

I’ve been neglecting OD for a few days in favor of a Carol Berg series. So I’m looking at my bookmarks, wondering which of the many highlighted entries to read first, and it occurs to me what your title might mean… Congratulations!
