Monday Night

The party that almost didn’t happen, finally happened on Saturday night. Lots of good food, good wine and laughs. I made the lasagna and various other little things and the others brought garlic bread, salad, dessert, etc. 10 people can sure make a lot of dirty dishes and glasses. Thank goodness, Terry is such a happy dishwasher, besides the built-in dishwasher. Even completely empty, it couldn’t hold everything. I prefer not to put the wine glasses, water goblets and Limoges dessert plates (wonderful flea market find) in there. My girlfriends laugh at me and kindly call me a plate whore..pardon my, or rather, their French. But, see, when you need them, you’ve got them.

That night I used my beloved English white ironstone plates (part flea market & part Ebay). We won’t talk about the Fiestaware, the LuRay from the ’50’s and another type of Majolica green set that looks like lettuce leaves, still just in the beginning of a collection. The problem I have is that I’ll find a few pieces of a collection that I will fall in love with and then, of course, I have to keep hunting until I add to it. Then there was the time that this vendor at the flea market talked me into buying his late grandmother’s beautiful china set. Yes, I’m a sucker for a good story and old pretty things. I’m up to 12 Fenton hobnail water goblets. Probably enough now. Funny, but I’m not at all attracted to the very expensive and beautiful crystal. I think I’d worry too much about it and then wouldn’t use it so then, what’s the point?

After dinner, we played a game similar to password with a timer, that automatically makes you get all excited and stressed out, as it tics faster and faster near the end. It really helps everyone get to know each other and produces a lot of laughter.
All in all, it was great fun and after we cleaned up the house on Sunday, we just relaxed, which I needed with this dumb time change. I can’t understand why it has to start early in March. I heard some politician say that it makes everyone feel a little more “summer-y.” I’m sure that’s just what people are feeling as they get up extra early in the dark in freezing weather back east! I do understand why it’s nice in warm weather to have more daylight into the evening. But studies have shown that even since WWII when they thought it would save energy, it didn’t. There must be some hidden agenda that I don’t know about to make it happen so soon.

Lacy is becoming more and more happy and adjusting very well here. Haven’t gone to the Vet’s yet. Going more for us than her since she’s up to date on shots, etc. Been going to this Vet for decades and love him a lot. He’s seen me through many, many pets. The good times and the bad. When you really look at Lacy, you realize that she’s all Lab but her German Shepherd coloring throws you off. She has long gangly legs and big feet and I still don’t think she’s as old as 3 years. I love big dogs so she can grow as much as she likes. We’re still working on her manners and she seems to be a quick learner but I think maturity will help a lot. I know that getting another pet quickly after you lose one can result in picking the wrong one but we’re old enough to know when it fits. None of the dogs at the Humane Society “fit” us. Just didn’t click. But this overgrown puppy sure has helped us smile rather than cry, missing Joey.

(I usually type this in Word and then copy/paste into here. I did that this time and noticed that it left out every apostrope. I tried correcting that but probably missed some. How odd.)

I just emailed the DM about the punctuation. It doesn’t like……….periods or quotation marks either. So glad the puppy is a happy one.

Your plates all sound lovely. I’m “over-plated” with no room for one more plate anywhere. You mentioned your majolica. My majolica geranium leaf plates are favorites and I use them all the time. I once had a larger plate or tray that went with them but it broke and I’ve been looking for another ever since. It’s a pleasure, I think, to set an inviting table. Lacy sounds like a keeper and a greatcompanion for you! [lelis]

i inherited alot of dishes; can’t afford to add to them but i did a few years back; colbalt blue ones my mother had from getting them on ‘dish night’ at the movies back in the 30’s. i know i’ll hear meg’s eye’s rolling back in her head when she has to sort through all this after i’m gone lol

RYN: I enjoy your “rambling” thoughts. I have tried Replacements in looking for the plate with no luck so far although it’s on my list of things I’m seeking with them. Have not tried eBay yet, as I’m trying to put off getting into eBay as long as possible, just on principle, but maybe this would be a good first foray into it. Thanks for your suggestions!

RYN: I’m sure the hair loss is from being so sick. It started shortly after I came home. It’s not as bad as it was but I hate the way my hair feels-thinner than I’m used to and no body. I think some of it is coming back already-I sure hope the body comes back to it too!

I wish my wife collected plates. I can get some use out of them too. I can’t eat off of her shoes.
