You Do The Writing

What does the word “queer” mean to you?

To me the word queer has two meanings:

1. Any form of gay at all. Whether you’re gay, lesbian, bi, trans, two-spiritied, pansexual, whatever – if you go for the same gender as whatever you are, you’re queer.

2. Someone who can be attracted to people of all genders, including those outside the binary gender system.

Now your turn.

my girlfriend says queer is such a fun word coz it’s general.. so in theory, shes saying the same thing as you- that it relates to anyone attracted to their own sex. i on the other hand am not a big fan of the word. i mean i guess i agree with your definitions, but for some reason, don’t like it much… its not that its offensive.. but i can think of friendlier sounding gay words. edi xx

I agree with both of your definitions. Honestly I think it has a lot of different definitions. I think it means something different to everyone. To me personally, as someone who identifies as queer, it encompasses all orientations. While I know what I’m more likely to be attracted to, it doesn’t rule out my “norm.” I dont know if that really makes sense. I wonder why it’s so hard to articulate

To me, it means a member of “The Queers,” the band responsible for the catchy punk album “Love songs for the retarded.” 🙂

Yeah ‘queer’ generally means gay to me, but it’s used in so many other terms, like ‘queer’ means ‘strange, not-normal/how it should be, weird – sorta like ‘weird yet intriguing’ – well to me anyway 🙂

1. Queer I think is used for an all-encompassing term on various forms of sexual identities. Basically what you put. 2. I also think it means something odd or strange. Although I never use it that way myself I do know some who have.My girlfriend used to identify as queer, but now she refuses to label herself, which I am finding among more people, which I find to be interesting and pretty awesome!

I agree with you, then again I don’t have much knowledge of the glbt community because there isn’t one where I am at. And secondly I am unseasoned with the glbt terms.

When I was young I use to say that to describe someone that acted a little flamboyant. You know like Ryan Seacrect from american idol. They could go either.
