Columbus Day…
…being a federal holiday, I had it off because I work for a financial instition. Incidentally, a whole bunch of my friends also had it off, which almost never happens. So I went with Wayne, Jeff, and Andy and we pretty much just spent the day traipsing around San Diego because we had nothing better to do.
We ended up at the top of Mount Soledad for no reason. We hadn’t intended to, but we were in La Jolla anyway, and I had never been to Mount Soledad before so we spent about twenty minutes there just taking in the view. It was amazing. It affords almost a three hundred sixty degree view of the whole city. If you ever visit San Diego, you must visit Mount Soledad. It’s a war memorial primarily, but the view is effing spectacular. I was so, so angry that I left my phone at The House on accident. It would have been a perfect picture for the panoramic feature on the iPhone 5.
After we were done contemplating the relative bigness/smallness of the world, we went to a bookstore in La Jolla proper which almost killed me, not literally. DG Wills, it was called, and I nearly died of happiness. It’s stacked to the brim with the best books I have ever seen, and there are LOTS of super old copies for really cheap! *dies* It was so beautiful. I bought an old late 1800s/early 1900s copy of volume 6 of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, with it’s super thin pages and lovely, lovely artwork. Good god, it was amazing.
Afterward, we decided to visit Cabrillo Monument, which is another military installation/tourist destination. The guns still work, there are several mini museums, a cool light house, a military cemetary, and the best goddamn view of the ocean I have ever seen. Even better than Mount Soledad because the Monument is much closer to the ocean. It really brought home just how tiny we are. We spent a good bit of time just enjoying the view and the sun and the cool breeze, then we poked around some of the bunkers and pill boxes before heading into Kearny Mesa for some awesome Thai food and a badass comic book store where I bought the first and second issues of Earth 2, which the owner said was a good place to start if you were new to comic books, which I am. They also sell Magic cards which is great.
We tried to catch the sunset at the top of the hill where Andy went to elementary school. It affords a good view of the coast, but we were only able to catch the last few seconds, which was okay with me because it got cold and Andy demanded I use his sweater, which was both unexpected and wonderful.
We went back to my house after that because my aunt and uncle have a jacuzzi and it sounded like an awesome idea. It was. We spent about a half hour being warm and having a good conversation about everything and nothing, then decided to go to the Blarney Stone for a drink before heading back to The House to round out the night with hookah and a little more conversation with Dustin and Dylan.
It was a really, really good day.
Near the end though, I really wish Wayne would have laid off. He knows how I feel about Andy, and I’ve been getting more and more confortable around Andy recently and am trying to establish a decent friendship with him, but today every time I tried to hang back to talk to Andy (and when Andy offered to drive me home at the end of the day), Wayne butted in and made some excuse for it not to happen. His excuse for driving me home was that he’d left his clothes there after the jacuzzi, which was true enough, except when we got there he decided he didn’t need to get them after all.
Cock block….jeez.
But it was okay because it was an awesome day and I wish more days like this would happen. I love just hanging out with friends like this! I do it so seldom because I always get anxious. I was anxious this time around too, but it got better the longer I was around them. It was the first time I’d ever properly hung out with Jeff, which was the biggest nervous factor, but he turned out to be really laid back and fun and I’m glad I didn’t chicken out.
Is it bad that I prefer the idea of listening to the things guys talk about than wishing I had a bunch of girl friends?
I’ve been lurking awhile… seems like we have a lot in common. Vegetarian geeks who work in finance. 🙂 I really should write more about my interests and whatnot instead of typical boy problems. I’m totally with you on preferring male company to female company!
