The Misfits, Sherlock, Jekyl, Doctor Who.

I effing love British television. Love it. It’s responsible for my most favorite tv shows EVER, which is saying a lot because I was a huge Sy-Fy Channel fan for the longest time, even if the tv shows were really, really bad science fiction, there were some like Stargate SG-1 and Farscape that I simply couldn’t get enough of for a while.

And then I disovered British TV when my cousin introduced us to The Misfits. It’s a TV show about a group of delinquent kids who are grouped together to do community service, are struck by insane lightning, and suddenly have superpowers. The first season was amaaaazing and I was really sad when Nathan left.

I watched Black Books for a little while too, but haven’t got around to finishing it.

But in truth, what really got me hooked on British tv shows was Sherlock, the new rendition of the old stories. First I was excited because Watson is played by the same man who will be playing Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit movies. Second, Benedict Cumberbatch is amazing. I’ve watched some of the older Sherlock Holmes shows, but I like the flair that Cumberbatch gives to the character. It’s brilliant. Exactly how I imagined  Holmes from the books. Refined, genius, but also arrogant without realizing how much he can hurt other people while at the same time not caring because he knows how much smarter and cleverer he is compared to everyone else. High Functioning Sociopath for the win.

Sherlock Holmes is one of my most favorite character profiles ever.

After I discovered Sherlock,  I watched a short series called Jekyl. I wasn’t impressed with the first ten minutes of the first episode, but once I actually got into the story I was very very upset that the series was so short! I have never read Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, but I intend to because of this show. I understand the ideas behind the story though, and I know that in the book he dies as Mr. Hyde, so I was very interested to see the twist provided with the character of Hyde in the tv show.

And then.

And then….

There came The Doctor.

The very, very first episode I ever watched of Doctor Who was several years ago. I don’t remember where I watched it or what I was doing. I feel like it was on the Sy-Fy channel, but that can’t be right. Anyway, the episode was called "Blink". At this time I had never heard of Doctor Who before except in passing from people who said they didn’t like it because it was a crazy tv show. I was a little interested though, so I decided to watch this episode to see if I could get into it, since it was on tv anyway.

It creeped the hell out of me. Weeping Angels? Are you kidding? I would never look at statues the same way again! They’re everywhere! I had a really hard time sleeping that night because I was afraid to close my eyes.

So I completely disregarded the show for a long while. Then I moved in to the house with my lovely, now ex-, roommates and there were tons of Dr. Who seasons all over the place on Netflix instant watch, even the old ones before the Ninth Doctor. So I shrugged and said, ok fine, I’ll start at the beginning of the Ninth Doctor and give it a second chance.

Done.

Lost and gone forever.

Yes it’s a crazy show. Yes the Doctor is weird and quirky.

It is the best science fiction series on tv right now. Possibly the best ever. I don’t care what anyone says. This show is epic. It’s so out there that you have to laugh at it at first, but then you end up thinking to yourself… why not? And it’s deceiving! Oh! So amazing! First and foremost you always think of it as a quirky comedy because the Doctor is just like that. He’s nine hundred years old after all. But then it’s gets all intense and you just fall in love with the characters so if something happens you just want to bawl your eyes out.

Or maybe that’s just me, but I love how it’s so easily able to blend so many emotions together. And if you’re the introspective type like I am, it can cause you to take a good hard look, not just at yourself, but at the nature of humanity as well. What are we made of? What are we capable of? What measures would we take for the preservation or freedom of the human race? Are we a good species on a whole, or a bad one? If we as a world were ever faced with the option of slavery or total destruction, what would we do?

It’s an amazing series and I encourage anyone who has even a passing interest in science fiction to watch it. My fiend LISA even watches it. She’s hooked on it. And science fiction isn’t really her thing.

I don’t know why I wrote this entry. I was bored I suppose.

Toodles!

I have Dr Who in my instant queue on Netflix but I’ve yet to start watching it. I miss Stargate, I hate how Universe ended.
