T’ai cher
You can walk faster in the dark after
you learn to walk slower in the light.
——-
I said this out loud the other day and halfway through I understood what I was about to say.
Great conversations tend to have that effect. They build up and suddenly you learn from something you are saying.
Seems backward. The T’ai chi class from last year has stayed with me. From class in the spring it seeped into my everyday actions. I remind myself every day: smooth, efficient, balanced movements. Select, place, verify, shift. No sudden steps or allowing your weight to fall into your steps. With more practice (awareness) it has become a smoother, more natural and frequent process. It resonates outward to life decisions as well. This coming move (country boy is finally moving into the city) will be the best planned. My footing will be solid before I step.
And the first time around Tai chi I learned only what I needed. And this time, too, I guess.
And instinct would tell me to seek out the same teacher for another class,
but…
“A teacher is anyone who leads us to a new vision of our lives
just when we thought there was only loss.”
–James P. Carse (Breakfast at the Victory, 1994)
I had other teachers last year outside of class.
And teachers tend to show up when you need them to,
or rather,
you recognize their existence when you need to.
Thank you for this. It is a valuable reminder.

“When the student is ready, the teacher will come.” Very true, and I’ve lately forgotten to remember this… thanks.

There are so many good teachers on OD. Every diarist has something to offer the other.
