English Essay 1
Wednesday night, I had to write an essay for English. It had to be reflective and had to show how an event changed our view on the world around us or ourselves. I put it off for a week b/c I couldn’t think of anything to write it on. So the night before it was due, I set out to write it and couldn’t think of anything still. So I just started writing about the only thing I could go on about. It took me until almost 1 o’clock. I really ended up liking it. I sent it to Crystal and the end made her cry. She said she was gonna send it to Kevin and that he’d like it. Which meant a lot to me b/c he’s like a million times smarter than me and if he liked s/t I wrote… it had to be decent… Tell me what you think…
Years from now, after I graduate from college and get on with life, whenever I think back to high school, one word will always come to mind: Band. Being in band has completely shaped how I spent my years in school and the person I am today.
When I first joined the program, I thought it was just going to be something to do, like it was in Grimmer. I had seen their performance of Martin Guere twice and thought it was cool what they could do. Little did I know what I was getting myself into.
As an incoming freshman with no experience whatsoever, everything was new to me. Quickly I began to understand how things operated, like our crazy schedule, and how much work was involved. I met several new people that summer, some I knew from Kolling, others from Kahler, and the upperclassmen as well. I made several good friends that I am still close to today. By the time school started, I felt ready for it, unlike many freshmen that are lost and scared. After all, I spent most of my summer already there and knew the school by then. I also learned about hard work and the agony of defeat.
Until that summer, I donât think Iâve ever been through anything such as this. Since I had nothing to compare the Bernstein season to personally, I didnât think it was as horrible as the upperclassman said. Once I became a sophomore and had a new season to work on, I realized what just how bad it was. The music wasnât too great and the drill was poorly written. But that only made me want to make the Easter Symphony season better. I worked harder than I did the year before. But I also knew how everything went, so I knew when I could put things off. I know this wasnât a wise idea, but Iâm a procrastinator, thatâs what I do. All the hard work paid off; Easter Symphony did quite well. We scored highly in most competitions. We even made it to BOA Semi-finals for Grand Nationals and Regional Finals in Toledo. That year was great.
When one season ends, another begins. The Divine Comedy was different from previous shows. It also pushed our limits as well. We were so ahead of schedule that we just get pushing forward. Even the tempos were raised to keep up with us! Things were also different, being an official upperclassman. I felt much older compared to many of the people I talked to. Thatâs only as a junior! This season was the most demanding and we succeeded, which raised the bar for years to come.
