I Am An 18-Wheeler/Heading Down the Interstate

‘And my brakes are gonna give
And I won’t know till it’s too late’

I’m finding myself really glad of so many of the things we were able to do here before things got … like this. What we’ve planted, what we’ve learned, what we’ve stashed away, laughing at the very idea of needing it. We have glass jars and valerian and chickens and hazelnuts and sunchokes and horse radish and sumac and gardens and we know how to freeze and can and cold store.

‘Tires screaming when I lose control
Try not to hurt too many people when I roll’

The goal was always to remain eccentric nerds who came in handy and knew how to kill a chicken and now it looks like we were just being prudent and that was not how we hoped anything would go.

‘I hope we’re all in crash position when we hit’

I wish I knew how to do those things. I foolishly made a point not to learn bc I didn’t want to be like the women in my family. I wanted to not need those skills.

I’ve never heard of sunchokes.

Surprised your song wasn’t Onions by the Mountain Goats. Jk.

@thecriticsdarling I had that song stuck in my head for like a week recently lmao.

Nana’s Depression mentality was passed down to me pretty comprehensively, and I was lucky to find a practical partner who shares my goals. I can certainly understand why you chose a different path though.
