Poem, germs, and liberals
Cool beans! I had a poem accepted by poetry.com. It will be part of this year’s anthology, which they invite the contributors to purchase, of course. A. is going to get it for me! I get to keep the copyright, and it is a semifinalist in a couple of contests, which are the reason I submit poetry there in the first place. (credit cards, yknow).
Miserable sick with a cold. Lately, the disease de rigeur for me is a few days of throat swollen with a bit of fever, just enough to encourage me to leave work early and go to bed with a pile of books.
I was involved in an email exchange with Chico and A. about someone’s claim that liberals work in universities and avoid “the market.” I commented that I have suggested to my kids—not that I’m sure that Ben is a liberal–that they should work in the enemy’s territory–in finance and such, to combine conscience with knowing how to do power. A emailed me back, and I quote: “Honey, are you nuts? Ben in finance? Why don’t you ask him to stick pins in his eyeballs?” He went on to say rather complimentary things about old Ben but that’s another story.
Yes, but at least they would be new and shiney clean pins rather than old and rusty

Congratulations on your poetry success from a liberal who works in the establishment’s territory — one of the country’s 10 largest banks. Whodathunkit?
