NEW SUCCESS!

The latest success has been to leave the HISTORY BOOKS at home and read current events in class. I write about eight questions after the article and we discuss them. It’s been much more interesting and the kids are responding.

We read about Pol Pot today this and I asked the class how many Americans out of a random population of 100 knew who he was?

A clever black student said, “Are the 100 Americans black or white?”

I asked what it mattered.

He laughed and said, “If they black you know none of them will know!” Some of his buddies laughed and gave him high fives.

Hmm…is that something to celebrate? There are cultural issues at work here that should be discussed.

But I am doing much better with this new approach to learning. Whew without the book things are much better. My worst class was my best today!
