Yeah, it’s a dumb entry title, I know. But that’s how I feel (in webz-speak, anyway). Let me explain:
I used to work for this radio station. It’s a crappy radio station, mostly, but they do something most "variety" stations don’t. They actually play a variety. At any given point in the day you could hear Colbie Caillat, Bob Seger, Poison, Nickleback, Alanis, Bjork, John Mayer, Talking Heads, Spin Doctors, Bon Jovi, Akon, and I’ve ran out of weird ass things to have heard on the radio now, but you get the point. They are all over the place in the music department and people around here LOVE it. At any rate, I worked as the business manager/promotions assistant for this radio station. I absolutely loved my job. Really. But I really didn’t dig the people I worked w/ and for, and with the addition of the move and needing new childcare, I decided to leave. (I’m pretty sure I’ve told you all of this) One of my (300) daily jobs was to make contacts in the concert world to help us score tickets to concerts to give away on air. Radio stations HAVE to give away concert tickets. People expect it. Now, they never ever buy these tickets. It’s all a game of "Look, giving us tickets to give away will be free advertising for the concert, which, in theory, will boost ticket sales, as well." And you have to convince these cynical, hard nosed PR people that YOUR radio station is big enough, w/ enough listeners, to make it worth their while to give you free tickets.
Sooo, round about the time I was about to leave the station, I had finally developed a good rapport w/ one of my contacts in Indianapolis. I sent her a proposal for a concert on 7/5 featuring John Mayer.
::side note:: I am in love w/ John Mayer. His music and voice melt me. I dig him. I don’t care if it’s not cool. I don’t care if he’s a sell out. I want to listen to him incessantly. & do sometimes!! ::end side note::
Well, I left the station a week or two after the proposal. On one of my last days at the station, I had commented to the station manager that I was really sad about leaving before having the chance to skim 2 tickets off the top, if we scored the free tix from the contact to this show. Skimming tix is one of the perks to the job. It not something you want to do frequently, but from time to time, everyone just smiles and looks the other way so that one of the employees gets a great free-bee just for working hard. The station manager said to me "If we score the tix, you can still have a pair b/c it’d be b/c of you that we got them. No problem.". Well, I have to confess, I took that with a grain of salt. These people are the kind to just forget their promises (another issue w/ the job I found. I made $3 less an hour than I was supposed to thanks to one of these "forgotten" promises… :(). I figured that this was one more promise that would be forgotten about.
Last week, I sent an email to the station manager, just asking how things were going. Yes, I also threw in there a wondering if they’d ever scored the John Mayer tickets… yeah, I was digging. I never heard anything back. The concert’s in 2 days and I figured that was my answer.
This morning, I got a phone call from the manager.
"Hey, Tia, sorry I didn’t get back with you. You have a pair of tix here, if you want them!"
Ok, ok, I squeed. I did. I think I hurt his ears, and I don’t care. 😉
Sooo, I’m going to see John Mayer… ON my birthday.
SQUEEE!!!
Happy birthday to me. woot.
Tia
Congratulations on the tickets, that’s neat. I’ve never been to a major concert, but whatever. I’m not a jealous. That’s an interesting story about the radio station, though. I always like learning about how different media works.
